From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Ruby is a member of the Children's League, a group of young people who survived the catastrophic illness that has killed most children in America. The survivors are blessed-or cursed-with a variety of supernatural powers, from great physical strength to Ruby's ability to invade and control the minds of others. These talents make the children valuable to the corrupt government. However, the adults controlling the League turn out to be corrupt themselves. When Ruby realizes that the latest mission she has been sent on was designed to eliminate some members of her team, she decides to circumvent the League. The teen sets out with one of her friends, Jude, in search of a flash drive that holds information that may offer a cure for the disease that killed so many children. They are soon joined by other members of the League. Struggling to survive winter in a lawless country with minimal supplies is difficult enough. Trying to keep everyone focused on the same goal when the team members aren't sure if they can trust one another is harder. When they finally find the boy with the flash drive, he is so ill that it's not clear if he will survive-or help them if he does. This fast-paced, suspenseful dystopian novel moves back and forth through time, jumping from one crisis to another, but frustratingly fails to completely fill in the backstory, which would have helped readers understand the characters' motivations.—Nancy Silverrod, San Francisco Public Library

Review
In the follow-up to Bracken's The Darkest Minds (2012), readers jonesing for an adrenaline fix will delight in 16-year-old Ruby's return as a reluctant resistance fighter. Having erased every trace of herself from Liam's mind and abandoned her friends in order to protect them, Ruby throws herself into mission after dangerous mission for the Children's League. Though purportedly fighting to save a generation of children stolen from their families and locked away in camps for possessing powers they barely understand, it quickly becomes clear to Ruby that the good guys may not be so good after all. A Hail Mary mission to recover a flash drive containing secrets about the origin of the disease that killed most American children and left survivors a persecuted and feared band of misfits forces Ruby on a perilous cross-country journey. It's a ride worth taking with her, particularly as Ruby collects a small posse of sidekicks who again become the beating heart at the center of this dark, dystopian series. Ruby is a wonderfully flawed heroine: fiercely loyal to the ones she loves and refreshingly conflicted about the enormous power she possesses. The intricate plot and diverse cast of recurring and new characters make this book difficult to fully appreciate as a stand-alone. But after reading the first two books, readers will be left clamoring for the third. (Dystopian thriller. 14 & up) Kirkus"

EXCELLENT SECOND BOOK!!
By The Book Runner
What an excellent sequel to Darkest Minds: full of hostility, friendships, deception, misplaced loyalties, missed loves, anxiety, and choices that hurt. This was a fantastic follow-up book that added a host of colorful (pun intended) characters and lots of action and vile behavior!

In the last book, Ruby “erased” Liam’s memories of her and left him to join the Children’s League to save him. After training for months, this book starts off with an assignment she and the foul mouthed, sarcastic and rude Vida are on. Vida is a blue (strong fighter) and they are being handled by hostile, former military agents who resent working with them and wouldn’t mind them dead.

“Cate had told me once that the only way to survive your past was to find a way to close it off behind you. I was afraid and terrified of the guilt and shame that would come flooding in when I retraced my steps, turned the lock and found the girl I had abandoned. I didn’t want to know what the darkness there had done to her if she would even recognize herself in my face.”

Cate is Ruby’s new councilor and Minder at the League and an older sister type confident – eventually. Vida is Cate’s biggest fan and loyal to her above everyone else. Vida is jealous and cautious of Ruby’s Orange status and never warms up to anyone. Ruby feels most responsible for Jude a small sunshine of PSI that is a yellow (energy) and reminded me of Charlie in Taps or Chuck in The Maze Runner. Alban is the leader of the League a Children’s Group and who was the President’s good friend and who wants respect, money and the promise of a place in the new government that will be set up once President Gray has been taken care of. Vile Clancy also is in this book causing grief and needing to be shot, once again!

My Favorite character was Cole, Liam’s older brother who has a wild personality and wants to keep his brother safe. He knows he can count on Ruby to find Liam and get back the microchip that Liam unknowingly took and that contains vital information for the League to help free the prisoners from their camps. Ruby and Jude meet up with Chubs after a daring escape and we learn what Chubs has been doing the last 6 months since he was shot. Zu is NOT in this book at all and we don’t really know where she is.

Ruby has to take the leadership role and finds that she has to use her powers to manipulate others: “Maybe the camp controllers had been right to do what they did to the dangerous ones. Maybe we needed to be muzzled, chained, conditioned to follow orders – it had felt so natural for me to command Rob, and Knox and every other kid who challenged me at the warehouse. And it made me Clancy. It made me Martin. It made me the Orange on the bus into Thurmond, who’d compelled that woman to kill herself with her own gun. I wasn’t any different than them.”

This series is a lot like Unwind by Neil Shusterman, the TV show Alphas, the books Paranormal and the kindle series Lux. I like Alexandra Bracken’s style of writing; her metaphors are entertaining, the plot exciting, the characters intriguing and the tempo stays pretty fast paced throughout. I can’t wait for the next installment and would recommend this to those who liked The Darkest Mind. It is better than most second books I have read lately.

Some non-descriptive kissing and profanity (B**ch, F-word, gd, jc, let’s face it, there was a LOT of swearing)

Would I/Did I buy it? Yes
Would I read it again? Yes
Would I recommend it to friends? Yes

What I Liked:

****POSSIBLE BOOK ONE SPOILERS. THOU ART WARNED****

Ahh, I have no idea how to write this review. I just read this book Monday morning (today is Tuesday), and my head is still whirling from everything that happened. Like book one, this book is jam-packed with nonstop action! I feel like the characters couldn't catch a break, especially Ruby. Not that that's a bad thing!

So, book one ends with Ruby joining the League. She dislikes the League, but she's joining so that she can train to be able to shut down the camps, and fight back. She trains physically and mentally, so that her body is able to handle a fight, and her mind (her ability) is more controlled.

Ruby is given a task: retrieve a flash drive, and in return, the flash drive will be used by the League to help shut down the camps and help the children (supposedly). Ruby and her League friend Jude, and a League agent Vida, set out to find the flash drive, and run into some familiar faces.
I really simplified the first part of the book, but the plot is kind of complex. I feel like things happen, event after event. This is fantastic, because my interest NEVER dwindled. And we get to see how Ruby handles things, situation after situation.

Ruby. Ruby has changed a lot since book one. She is better prepared to use her powers, and she WILL use her powers whenever necessary. She isn't really afraid to do so anymore. Ruby wields her powers expertly, and never backs down. She is brave, calculating, and has much better instincts than in book one.

The romance... well, we all know what happened at the end of book one. Liam isn't present for a lot of this book - and when he is, we don't get a lot on him and his condition. I mean, we know he is there, but at the same time, so many things happen constantly, and Liam is a bit of an afterthought.

But not necessarily for Ruby. She always thinks of him, and sometimes regrets what she did (as she should!). There are moments towards the climax and end of the book, in which I wanted to cheer for the two of them... but then there were some in which I wanted to punch Ruby. Hard.

But don't give up on the two of them. Trust me. Don't. The romance is bittersweet for most of the book, but do NOT let that stop you from reading this book. Romance is important, and in this series, the romance is heartbreaking, but don't NOT read this series because of that. I have high hopes for the romance.

Things kept happening, so I had an interesting time deciphering what exactly was the climax. The ending though... WOAH. Way to drop a bombshell, Bracken! I mean, it's not really a cliffhanger, but oh my... can't wait to see how that works out in book three!

As a sequel, this book is FANTASTIC. Like, this series does not undergo the sequel slump. You all know I'm scared of sequels. Well, this is a great sequel! And an awesome book, in general.

What I Did Not Like:

It's not that I didn't like this particular part of this book that I'm about to explain - because I think it's totally necessary to the plot, to the direction in which Bracken is going with the story... but it still mad me sad.

I'm talking about Liam and Ruby.

How? How could Ruby do that? I feel like she was trying to be selfless, but really, she was selfish. She took away his choices for him, without asking him. Yes, this happened in book one, but the repercussions are evident in book two.

And I kind of hate Ruby for what she did to Liam in book one. But I still think she is amazing heroine and protagonist. And if everything ends up being well with Liam, and with her and Liam, then maybe I'll forgive her. But she... she shouldn't have done that.

So, now you know Ruby isn't perfect. See why this particular isn't necessarily a bad thing? It's character development. But it's also cruel. CRUEL AUTHOR.

Would I Recommend It:

I most certainly would! If you loved, liked, or enjoyed The Darkest Minds, then you'll enjoy this sequel. If you're debating on whether or not to read this series - do it! The Darkest Minds is on sale RIGHT NOW ($0.99, I believe), and I'm telling you, this sequel is amazing. So, read this book!

Rating:

4 stars - what a fantastic, solid sequel! I'm super glad that I enjoyed this one, because sequels still scare me. But Bracken does not disappoint!

keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time!
By D. Taylor
4.75 stars ....Ok I wanted SO bad to give this 2nd book 5 stars because it was a true whirlwind of a ride, BUT to me it had one single flaw that the first book didn't carry as strongly ... "Distracting" profanity... The first book had it here and there to carry the strong emphasis I know the author was trying to convey to the situation or moment, yet during this novel it was so prevalent and so redundant that it distracted from the character doing the speaking and for me as the reader, it created that disappointment of needing to skim a few lines every few pages so I could stay in the moment of the journey and not let it affect or mar the character itself...... Truly the writing is so great that saying God's name in vain over and over and over and yes, over, simply lowered the writing's ingeniousness down a few notches ... That being said, I absolutely love this awesome over-the-top plot line that keeps you guessing and staying so intrigued in the journey page after page... The author created a story so well written that your heart breaks when their's get broken, and you're as angry as they get when things go wrong, yet oh so hopeful along with them as the tides appear to turn in their direction ... I love Liam, Chubs, Vida. Jude and amazing Roo.... Story weaving better than I've read in a very long time ... I am still excited for the 3rd installment that is hopefully close to being finished so we have a release date to look forward to. :) I know it's gonna be even better than these 2 even though I can't imagine what could possibly occur next!
