Drawn, he stepped forward.

Good Place to Start

If you're a player of World of Warcraft, but not into the old RTS games or the books that have come before, this novel is the place to jump and see some of the story behind the game you've been playing.

Christie Golden has crafted a strong character-centric tale following the life of Arthas Menethil. It shows him growing into a young man, joining the ranks of the paladins, and his eventual fall from grace in a way that is quick, concise, and yet still meaningful. Arthas is portrayed as neither a spoiled brat or an arrogant upstart, but as a well-meaning person with a good soul and a few very human and realistic character flaws that gets twisted into something horrible, party by outside forces, but also by the lack of control he has over himself. As I read it, I found myself comparing it to the fall of Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars Saga, and I hate to say it, Golden did a superior job with her take on how a hero becomes the villain.

If this book has any weakness, is that its a little too short. The first two volumes take place at a good pace, always moving but taking the time to really show us all that's transpiring. As the book moves through its third act, those familiar with Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne will note at how briefly the events of the undead campaign are covered. In contrast to the first two thirds of the book, the last third skips over large chunks of the storyline to make sure the crucial points get the time needed, which is good.

The main story in no way feels slighted. But for those of already familiar with the first draft of events, so to speak, it seems as if Golden were either pressed for time, or had a page count limit she was working under because the trek through Anub'Arak is given only the barest of mentions, and the encounter with Sapphiron is treated as if it never happened. An odd choice, given how the dragon features prominently in the World of Warcraft game at the moment.

Lastly, the book concludes with a Further Reading section. This is something new readers can really appreciate. The novel touches on events and places from other games, and expanded upon in earlier novels. This section lets the reader know where to learn more about those places and events, what novels to buy and what games to play. Some might call it shameless marketing, but it makes a handy reference section for new readers.

A good "Bad Guy" story

First let me say, if you are a player of the game and want to expand a little on the mythos behind it, then this would be a good book for you. If you are like me and have read pretty much all the WoW books, then "Arthas" is a must read. For those of you that neither play the game, nor have read any other WoW book, you won't feel slighted. This is a good fantasy novel about a prince who follows the road paved with good intentions to hell.

Christie Golden seems to be a fan of writing the "bad guy" story. She's written both Rise of the Horde and Lord of the Clan (though the argument could be made that the leader of the orcs is not a bad guy in the true sense). With Arthas: Rise of the Lich King she gets the nod from Blizzard (the company who owns WoW) to write an account on one of the most powerful and profound characters in the WoW universe. And she does VERY well.

I agree, however, with the other reviews that state she seemed to become bored, or was strapped for time, near the end of the story. While I understand the desire to not "re-write" some things that have appeared (or may appear) in other WoW novels, sometimes the story jumped from "A" to "C" to without satisfactorily touching on "B". There are parts in the book where it was almost like "By the way, there was this big war and the good guys won"; where one sentence was the springboard past epic events in the history. Noticing it as one who has a strong understanding of the lore, I can only imagine someone who has no idea scratching their heads before reading on.

Otherwise, as I've said, enjoy the story, you won't be disapointed.

Completely faithful

Christie Golden knocks it out of the park again. Arthas's story is one driven by the characters and their emotions more than bare-bones action, and of all the people in Blizzard's writing arsenal, Golden is the only one who could tackle such a story. And that she does, with amazing grace and tenderness toward every character, delivering each in an unbiased light. The lore is rich without being intimidating, the characters warm and developed, and it gives us Warcraft lore buffs some tasty things to chew on for a long while after. Highly recommended for anyone who likes Warcraft!

Broken Piano is like a bar crawl that I didn't want to end

This book is defintitely not mainstream, which is a very good thing! Broken Piano for President takes you on a wild ride with Deschler Dean, the protagonist, as your [drunk] driver, so wear your seat belt. By day, Deschler Dean is a sub-par valet, parking cars for the city's elite and VIPs. By night, Deschler BECOMES one of the VIPs. Through the course of heavy imbibing, Deschler transforms into one of the fast food industry's biggest and best kept secrets. Deschler has an amazing ability to create delicious hamburgers while he's hammered. Unfortunately for Deschler, he has no recollection of events when he wakes up hungover. Ultimately, the two largest fast food conglomorates vie for Deschler's loyalty. Hijinks ensue.

I read much of this book on an airplane and found myself having to stifle laughter so my seat neighbors wouldn't think I was crazy. I would recommend this book be read with a nice glass of Jack Daniels. A fun read- two thumbs up!

A crazy ride with dips and blind curves...

Normally, Broken Piano For President by Patrick Wensink would not come up on my radar screen. The only reason it did was publicity over the cover (which resembles the Jack Daniels logo), and how the company handled the situation with class and humor. Anyway, it was enough to get me to pick it up at the library and give it a read. It turned out to be one of the most "out there" novels I've read of late. It reminds me of a very dark version of a Tim Dorsey novel.

Deshler Dean, the main character, refers to himself as a "cliff drinker". When he starts to drink, he completely loses track of what happens. But apparently, he's very active during those times. From what he can tell, he apparently works for two warring hamburger mega-corporations, coming up with ideas that top each other. Furthermore, each side knows he's working with the other side, but thinks he's really spying and trying to lead their competitors astray. Meanwhile, he works a day job as a parking valet, approached by many important people who mean nothing to him, but who apparently know him very well. His life is a continual quest to figure out who and what he's supposed to be, and whether he can be that person during the times he's sober and can remember things.

Both the characters and the writing make this an enjoyable (if not strange) read. In addition to Dean, there are band members who are reluctant assassins, girlfriends who aren't who they appear to be, and Russian cosmonauts who may or may not be real and who might have an axe to grind. And during all this, the two mega-burger chains are continuing to top each other in bigger and more unhealthy fare (which the public literally eats up). Wensink uses the characters and corporations to grill a few sacred cows (into hamburgers), and the mirror he uses to reflect back public eating habits is not flattering.

Broken Piano For President a fast ride on a road filled with blind curves and dips. They may not all makes sense, but the overall effect is a memorable trip.

Familiar World---Completely Unique Execution

Broken Piano for President takes place in a familiar world: an unforgiving, almost featureless city ruled by fast food corporations and millionaire execs. Nothing grows there except cement pilings.

And the main character is a guy I knew in high school: the fairly clueless band member whose only loves are his band and his booze. No matter how close you get to this person, in real life and in Broken Piano, you don't really know what's going on with them. They're eccentric and kind of stupid, but so mysterious (maybe it's the memory loss, maybe it's the entertainer charisma), that you can't help wanting to be close to them.

Considering all of these things I've seen and read before, Wensink's done a thing in Broken Piano that I've never encountered anywhere. He's made me feel the same way I felt when I was living in that city and dating that clueless band member. Like I wasn't on the bandwagon, like I wanted to be, and then when the life of Deshler Dean is falling to pieces and I'm finally aboard, I realize just what is at stake and it's too late to keep everything from self-destructing--which it does, in real life and in Broken Piano.

It's weird, truthful, and hysterical. Wensink's timing is spot on, his writing is conversational and smooth, and his characters are so familiar, and yet still surprising.

I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Dr. Kahn is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine and Founder of the Kahn Center for Cardiac Longevity. He is a graduate Summa Cum Laude of the University of Michigan School of Medicine. He lectures widely on the cardiac benefits of vegan nutrition, mind body practices and heart disease reversal. He writes blogs for Huffington Post, MindBodyGreen, Forksoverknives.com and other sites. He also writes for Readers Digest Magazine as the Holistic Heart Doc and his first book, The Whole Heart Solution, was published by them. It is now a public TV special. He is the owner of GreenSpace Cafe in Ferndale, Michigan.

Special tests like apo lipoprotein and hs-Crp can be really helpful and ...

This book is a breath of fresh air especially coming from a cardiologist. Too many people in healthcare today ignore natural, diet, exercise techniques as unproven or "alternative". This couldn't be farther from the truth!

In fact, Dr. Kahn goes over research that supports his diet and lifestyle advice for heart disease prevention.

One of the things I found most helpful reading this was the section on advanced cardiac markers (blood testing) that is not usually included in routine physicals. I know myself that more and more research is supporting the fact that routine physicals and bloodwork are just not enough to detect heart disease. Special tests like apo lipoprotein and hs-Crp can be really helpful and he explains why and how to get these tests.

I also thought the section describing the benefits of sauna treatments was fascinating. That was one of a few new, unique recommendations he has.

Lastly, Unlike many medical books- this one is an easy read with quick actionable advice.

The world should support people like Dr. Kahn who supports the shift towards wellness rather than "illness" medicine.

Dr. Kahn is doing wonderful work spreading the message of preventing cardiovascular disease. We have been searching for the magic pill or procedure for our number one killer in this country but the real cure is to address the root causes through lifestyle with healthy eating habits, exercising, sleep, avoiding smoking and managing stress. He even talks about the benefits of saunas for heart health, so he covers it all!

This book reaches us through the studies that supports the importance of lifestyle but more importantly through the touching stories of patients and their families. Heart disease is often preventable and I am on board with him to help prevent 1,000,000 heart attacks as he proposes. His advice is practical and we need to awaken to the active role that each of us plays in our own healthcare.

Excellent read. Dr. Kahn finds a good balance between strong science and approachability for the reader. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was concise and informative, exactly the appropriate length to make the argument for the next generation of care. I will strongly recommend this book to my friends, colleagues and patients - perfect for any one who wants to find optimal cardiac wellness!

Dr. Tim Chester is director of the Porterbrook Institute. He also coleads The Crowded House Sheffield in the U.K. and speaks at conferences around the world. He was previously research and policy director for Tearfund and tutor in missiology at Cliff College. Short, sharp, indispensable

Christians and pornography. Depending on who you talk to, you'll get one of three responses: 1) it's a deeper, more wide spread problem within Christianity than we know or want to admit, 2) the problem is overblown and the statistics are imbalanced, or 3) *cough* uhhhhhh, next topic.

In Closing the Window, Tim Chester cites a number of different studies and surveys that have very consistent results: one in three. One in three people in the church are struggling with pornography. While I'm not one to bicker about the numbers, I think it's fair to say that it's a growing problem for each subsequent generation within the church.

And Tim has written a gospel-saturated little book (146 pages) that will be indispensable for anyone leading men, young adults, or a whole church. As just such a leader, I am constantly looking for books that handle tough topics in a way that is simple, clear, and relatively brief to build a "loaner library". I believe that Tim Chester's Closing the Window is the book for just that purpose.

The structure of the book revolves around "Five Keys in the Battle Against Porn":

1. Abhorence of porn
2. Adoration of God
3. Assurance of grace
4. Avoidance of temptation
5. Accountability to others

"We become Christians through faith and repentance. We continue and grow by ongoing faith and repentance. And this means that we counter porn through faith and repentance. Battling porn with faith means embracing the truth about God in place of the false promises of porn. Battling porn with repentance means turning from self to worship God."

Honest, bold, and true.

I hardly ever use all caps but this seems appropriate: WE NEED TO BE OPEN ABOUT THIS STRUGGLE WITH OTHER PEOPLE. Whew. I said it. Anyway.

The framework of this book is built with the "Five Key Ingredients In Your Battle Against Porn" that are super helpful in getting free from this addiction.

As opposed to the usual "just stop masturbating" book, Closing the Window challenges us to have a vision and desire for God that overcomes the fleeting desires of pornography.

Some of the best writing I've ever read on the topic. Thanks, Tim.

Best Book on Purity ever Written

I wrote the book "The War Within, Gaining Victory in the Battle for Sexual Purity." Of the 70+ books that I have read on this topic, this book and Michael Cusick's book "Surfing For God" are the only two books that I confidently say are 'better than my book'. I whole heartedly recommend it. It goes to the heart of matter, highlighting the false premise or lies of porn, and the promises of God that counters these lies. He gives five overarching principles of breaking free from pornography. It is solid Biblically and founded on great theology. It is a MUST READ

Our Mother-Daughter bookgroup read this book and everyone fell in love with Beatrix Potter all over again. Our girls are 9 & 10 year olds and it prompted them to pull out their favorite old Potter books and share them with the rest of the group. But I think Moms appreciated the book more. We made the meal Beatrix ate every day as a child and shared it to bring the story a little closer to us.
