FOR THE JEWISH THINKER

As was Rabbi J. Kagan's THE JEWISH SELF, this book, THE CHOICE TO BE, is challenging, enlightening and rewarding. Rabbi Kagan 's book is saturated with insights on Torah Judaism that one would not normally come upon; of course each new idea is thoroughly backed by the Commentaries in his myriad footnotes. THE CHOICE TO BE is on the top of my list, right along with the Ramchal's works. That's how much I like it and Rabbi Kagan's earlier THE JEWISH SELF. i recommend this book to any Jew bent on plumbing the depths of Torah.

Solutions to questions from a Torah worldview

Rabbi Jeremy Kagan, Principal of Midreshet Tehillah in Jerusalem offers religious and non-religious readers an introduction to the solutions to many questions from "the Torah worldview," a literal reading of biblical texts. The book has twenty-one chapters and three appendices. Kagan discusses subjects such as developing oneself, faith, free will, sin, repentance, our perception of the Creator, Divine judgment, the roots of exile, and the conflict between Torah and science. One of his three appendices summarizes his understanding of these and the other subjects that he discusses. Another discusses the miscommunications of modern technology. The third focuses on maintaining a close relationship with God. The book has over a thousand footnotes, many referring to biblical passages.

Kagan stresses the importance of faith and connecting with God. Humans, he writes, feel inadequate and desire to cling to God. He sees the observance of the biblical commands as a way to bring Jews to faith. He is convinced that Jews were named after the biblical Judah who sinned, recognized his error, and repented, and Jews received this name to encourage them to do the same.

Readable, clear

I bought this as a complement to my Master's degree, which doesn't include a course on accounting or finance because I don't want to spend a lot of time studying the subject - it isn't something that excites me. Having said that, I think a lot of managers need to know something about accounting and finance.

The book suits my purpose well: it's clear, readable, and has good short exercises to check your understanding at the end of each chapter. I haven't yet read the whole thing - as I said, the subject doesn't excite me - but doing so would not be too painful. Even if I stop reading it now, 1/3 of the way through, I have learned a lot of basic information about how accounting is done, and I would now at least know where to start with a financial statement.

Good lab manuel

This is a great lab manuel for anatomy and physiology but it should make it more clear that its not just the cat dissection. I had already bought a lab manuel and was looking to purchase a cat dissection manuel and the description of this book doesnt make it clear that its not only the cat dissection but the entire lab manuel as well. But if you are looking for a lab manuel that also contains the cat dissection then this is great.

Not good condition

I ordered a text book that included worksheets throughout each chapter. The book was listed in "GOOD" condition but when it arrived, the cover was a little worn, but looked ok. However when I looked through it, almost all of the worksheets throughout the book were already filled in, and lots of the pages were written on. Considering the amount of writing in this book, I would not have labeled it "GOOD" condition. For only about 30% more, I could have gotten a brand new, updated edition. Guess I have a different idea of what GOOD condition is. Shipping was fine. (BTW, many of the answers that were filled in weren't even right!)

Not Like the Usual Story

This is a terrific story, placed in a prospective where characters come to life that you knew existed in the lives of the main characters but never came to know until Gene Edwards brought them to life in story. It is like seeing God's plan come into fruition before your eyes. Even a small child can comprehend the awesomeness of God as it is being read to them. It brings relationships between people into view that are so natural and normal that it makes you feel you are a part of story, like a friend standing right there in the midst of all the events. Mr. Edwards carrys an anointing that most good writers can't even imagine exist.

Inspiring!

The Birth tells the story of the birth of Christ from heaven’s perspective. This is a fascinating short but powerful book about the events of the incarnation – the invasion of God into human form as the baby Jesus. We discover the excited and significant roles the angels played as they realized something new was about to happen and they are instructed to be messengers to Mary and Joseph and then to appear to the shepherds. The story is told in historical sequence and shows the concerns of Joseph and Mary as well as their delight in the many affirmations of Jesus divinity. His divinity is confirmed by the angels, the shepherds, the Kings and the prophets in the temple. This is a delightful book that could be read to grade school children at Christmas as well as enjoyed by adults.

Amazing Birth

I have read this series years before and gave it away to pass on to others.... it's worth the read again. So, I am very happy to have found the entire series on Amazon!
Gene Edwards is a master story teller and it's easy to believe what he writes as true.... or could be. The angels' words, actions and emotions are so belivable. I love the way Gene Edwards writes, all his books are so vital.

About the Author
Born in the north of England, the author of The Boy Who Saw True chose to remain anonymous and would only allow his diary to appear several years after his death, with the stipulation that the original spellings were to remain and some of the names be changed. His editor Cyril Scott enjoyed a two-fold career as a musical composer and a writer on the occult and other related matters.

My true story

I know this sounds silly: my husband is a school bus driver and was driving kids who go to special schools. Most were obnoxious, in constant motion and incapable of listening. One little boy like to sit up front and talk and although we can't remember the exact subject now, it had to do with reading others thoughts which he seemed to do, and remembering past lives amongst other things. If he had a bad day at school, he never gave anyone grief on the bus, he just parked himself on the bottom step and made my husband and the attendant lift him onto the bus. Other than that he seemed to be no trouble.
I had just read this book, and suggested my husband loan it to the boy. After a number of weeks of my suggestion, he told the boy 'this is a book about a boy who reminds me of you, I thought you'd like to read about him.' So the boy took it without saying anything. Weeks past, and one day when they arrived at the boy's stop, the father of the child was waiting. He talked to my husband and mentioned the book (at first my husband was afraid the family was fundamentalist christians or something). The dad said the boy read the book 7 times and asked himself to read it too. And he finally understood his son. He finished by saying: 'You were listening to my son... and I should have been.'
After that, the boy seemed more calm at school and became a great help on the bus, corraling the littlest kids together and helping to keep an eye on them. And a few weeks later, he was back in the regular school.
I believe there are people like the boy in this book, just because I don't have this gift doesn't mean I have to deny its existence. (I also don't embrace everything without at least a grain of salt. ;-))

For anyone interested in auras, spirits, and spirituality.

I was sorry when the book ended. This is the diary of a young boy born in victorian England with the ability to see and hear spirits. His family life in the victorian era is interesting to say the least, while the insights provided by conversations with spirits, teachers, and people who have "passed over" are fascinating and thought provoking. This is a book I plan to give to my friends who are following a spiritual path. It is easy to read and humorous as well. Most of the origional mispellings (from the diary) remain intact in this published edition, delightfully reminding us of the youthful innocence of the author.
