Excellent Overview of ES&H
By A Customer
I found this book to be an excellent review of the field of environmental health and safety. It is balanced between the sometimes separate fields of environmental health and occupational health and safety. The book manages to cover both areas very well. Of the books I have read and used, this is probably the best combined coverage of the entire ES&H field. A wealth of helpful examples are included so the reader can adapt them for their own needs. Definitely a worthwhile book for professionals and students dealing with these issues to own.

The first edition of this successful text considered nonlinear geometrical behavior and nonlinear hyperelastic materials, and the numerics needed to model such phenomena. By presenting both nonlinear continuum analysis and associated finite element techniques in one, Bonet and Wood provide, in the new edition of this successful text, a complete, clear, and unified treatment of these important subjects. New chapters dealing with hyperelastic plastic behavior are included, and the authors have thoroughly updated the FLagSHyP program, freely accessible at www.flagshyp.com.

An excellent advanced course or self-teaching text
By Ron Thomson
This is possibly the clearest textbook exposition of the fundamentals of nonlinear mechanics that I have seen. The various finite deformation tensors are developed thoroughly but from initially simple systems in a manner that should be accessible to senior students. These fundamentals are then applied to the increasingly-important class of hyperelastic materials, a fairly recent development in many FE codes but with applications ranging from vehicle tyres, to running shoes to biomedical implants.
Unlike many texts, this book does not attempt to address the whole field of continuum mechanics and, in particular, does not really consider inelasticity or fluids. This helps keep the cost down to a level that students might afford.
An alternative might be Mase's 'Continuum Mechanics' (Shaum's Outline Series), which does not however include the finite element aspects.

Does a good job with the fundamentals
By A Customer
This book does well with the principles of finite deformation. From its first few chapters which enter into the preliminaries of finite deformation to its final chapters which transform the theory of finite deformation into a workable finite element code. If you are interested in going from the theory to the finite element code, this book is for you. The book uses a finite deformation (hyperelastic and isotropic) finite element code to teach you all of the subroutines required. The book references a website where you can download the source code. The only major weakness of the book is the fact that the book ultimately assumes an isotropic material to carry the theory forward.

Excellent
By Lance C. Hibbeler
Bonet and Wood have done an excellent job with this book. After motivating what they are trying to do with simple examples of nonlinear mechanics, they move into some basic vector and tensor math. Summation signs are explicitly used, so if you are new to continuum mechanics you don't have to try to learn the ins and outs of the seemingly bizarre notation at the same time as the fundamental concepts (although you really should learn it at some point in time). Once the math is set up, Bonet and Wood move into finite kinematics, the force balance, material constitutive models, and finally, getting all of the above set up in an actual computer code (which is available for download) to do some FEA.

The strong point of the book is how patient the authors are with you. I found the derivations to be very lucid, with most, if not all, of the important steps shown. Bonet and Wood always tie things back to linearizing the nonlinear problem in anticipation for putting it on the computer. The Newton-Raphson procedure, and its various improvements (line search, etc.) are very nicely explained, so it is clear not just what and why but how we go about solving nonlinear mechanics problems. I highly recommend this book for starting to learn continuum mechanics and one way of solving its problems on the computer.

Nota bene: the emphasis is on large-deformation elasticity, which is a good, relatively simple place to start in continuum mechanics. The material models are all eventually taken as isotropic (which is more than just extra constants, as another reviewer pointed out, since then you must use the exponential map). Plasticity is briefly covered, but only the basic J2 model with hardening. Search elsewhere (Simo and Hughes, or Dunne and Petrinic) if you are interested in computational plasticity. Maybe (and hopefully) in the next edition Bonet and Wood will get to those topics.

The Devil in History: Communism, Fascism, and Some Lessons of the Twentieth Century, by Vladimir Tismaneanu

The Devil in History is a provocative analysis of the relationship between communism and fascism. Reflecting the author’s personal experiences within communist totalitarianism, this is a book about political passions, radicalism, utopian ideals, and their catastrophic consequences in the twentieth century’s experiments in social engineering. Vladimir Tismaneanu brilliantly compares communism and fascism as competing, sometimes overlapping, and occasionally strikingly similar systems of political totalitarianism. He examines the inherent ideological appeal of these radical, revolutionary political movements, the visions of salvation and revolution they pursued, the value and types of charisma of leaders within these political movements, the place of violence within these systems, and their legacies in contemporary politics.

The author discusses thinkers who have shaped contemporary understanding of totalitarian movements—people such as Hannah Arendt, Raymond Aron, Isaiah Berlin, Albert Camus, François Furet, Tony Judt, Ian Kershaw, Leszek Kolakowski, Richard Pipes, and Robert C. Tucker. As much a theoretical analysis of the practical philosophies of Marxism-Leninism and Fascism as it is a political biography of particular figures, this book deals with the incarnation of diabolically nihilistic principles of human subjugation and conditioning in the name of presumably pure and purifying goals. Ultimately, the author claims that no ideological commitment, no matter how absorbing, should ever prevail over the sanctity of human life. He comes to the conclusion that no party, movement, or leader holds the right to dictate to the followers to renounce their critical faculties and to embrace a pseudo-miraculous, a mystically self-centered, delusional vision of mandatory happiness.

Review
"[A] fine and undoubtedly enduring study."--William Pfaff"New York Review of Books" (06/20/2013)

"This volume achieves the rare distinction of being at once nuanced and impassioned. It is likely to remain a durable contribution to a deeper understanding of the great historical outrages of the past century which were closely linked to the concept and reality of totalitarianism."--Paul Hollander"New Criterion" (04/01/2013)

"An ambitious and challenging rereading of twentieth-century history."--John Gray"Times Literary Supplement (TLS)" (01/02/2012)

"A definitive account of the origins, the appeal, the doctrinal foundations and the political technology of history's two bloodiest political faiths . . . this profound and rich book is also a cautionary tale."--Leon Aron"Wall Street Journal" (01/12/2013)

"The parallels between communism and fascism have often been noted, fueling endless debates over whether the movements were fundamentally similar or different. The Devil in History . . . presents a genuinely fresh perspective on this topic."--Andrew Nagorski"Foreign Affairs" (01/01/2013)

"At a time when liberal values are showing their frailty and salvationist mythologies are returning to favour in different places, an absorbing comparative essay is provided on the origins, ravages and ultimate failure of the radical totalitarian movements of the last century: communism and fascism. Vladimir Tismaneanu is an appropriate guide, a polymath steeped in the philosophical, literary and social science texts spawned by defenders, apostates and analysts of this phenomenon."--Tom Gallagher"International Affairs" (09/01/2012)

"Tismaneanu's real concern is to examine what he calls the 'maximalist utopian aspirations' expressed by communist and fascist regimes in Europe to try to understand how it is that systems that set out with a utopian agenda--world revolution or national rebirth--end up constructing murderous dystopias. There is a consensus in the Western world that these were 'delusional visions', as Tismaneanu calls them, but both European communism and fascism have died as mainstream political forces, making it easier to see them as deluded. The core of this perceptive and intelligent analysis is addressed to the more troubling question of how they were possible at all."--Richard Overy"Times Higher Education" (09/13/2012)

"The book offers a fascinating read with an incredible wealth of bibliographic sources that will benefit all those interested in the topic. The author has succeeded in giving not only a solid account of the spirituality and history of communist and fascist regimes, but also an outstanding testimony of liberal political and normative thinking."--Camil Roman"Cambridge Review of International Affairs" (05/08/2013)

"Many books have been written about the similarities and differences between communism and fascism, both in theory and practice. None, however, matches the insight, analysis, and deep thought found in The Devil in History."--Ronald Radosh"Weekly Standard" (08/12/2013)

"Tismaneanu seeks to fulfill the ancient Jewish commandment of remembering and reminding, zachor, lest we forget and it may return. . . . Tismaneanu argues convincingly that a reckoning with the past can be both exorcism and therapy, and insists that there should be no silence or thick line separating the present from the embarrassing past. No reader of this book can accuse its author of ignoring the past."--Aviezer Tucker"Perspectives on Politics" (12/01/2013)

"Tismaneanu's lucid narrative walks us through an intellectual landscape that traces the trajectory of totalitarian thinking back to its origins."--J. P. O Malley"The Daily Beast" (09/28/2012)"

"[A] fine and undoubtedly enduring study. This affinity of Leninism with Nazism is the argument of Tismaneanu s book. It is a claim that since 1945, and particularly the Cold War, has generated much controversy. A distinguished book."--William Pfaff"New York Review of Books" (06/20/2013)"

This volume achieves the rare distinction of being at once nuanced and impassioned. It is likely to remain a durable contribution to a deeper understanding of the great historical outrages of the past century which were closely linked to the concept and reality of totalitarianism. --Paul Hollander"New Criterion" (04/01/2013)"

An ambitious and challenging rereading of twentieth-century history. --John Gray"Times Literary Supplement (TLS)" (01/02/2012)"

A definitive account of the origins, the appeal, the doctrinal foundations and the political technology of history's two bloodiest political faiths . . . this profound and rich book is also a cautionary tale. --Leon Aron"Wall Street Journal" (01/12/2013)"

The parallels between communism and fascism have often been noted, fueling endless debates over whether the movements were fundamentally similar or different. The Devil in History . . . presents a genuinely fresh perspective on this topic. --Andrew Nagorski"Foreign Affairs" (01/01/2013)"

Tismaneanu s lucid narrative walks us through an intellectual landscape that traces the trajectory of totalitarian thinking back to its origins. --J. P. O Malley"The Daily Beast" (09/28/2012)"

At a time when liberal values are showing their frailty and salvationist mythologies are returning to favour in different places, an absorbing comparative essay is provided on the origins, ravages and ultimate failure of the radical totalitarian movements of the last century: communism and fascism. Vladimir Tismaneanu is an appropriate guide, a polymath steeped in the philosophical, literary and social science texts spawned by defenders, apostates and analysts of this phenomenon. --Tom Gallagher"International Affairs" (09/01/2012)"

Tismaneanu's real concern is to examine what he calls the maximalist utopian aspirations expressed by communist and fascist regimes in Europe to try to understand how it is that systems that set out with a utopian agenda world revolution or national rebirth end up constructing murderous dystopias. There is a consensus in the Western world that these were delusional visions, as Tismaneanu calls them, but both European communism and fascism have died as mainstream political forces, making it easier to see them as deluded. The core of this perceptive and intelligent analysis is addressed to the more troubling question of how they were possible at all. --Richard Overy"Times Higher Education" (09/13/2012)"

"Vladimir Tismaneanu is the perfect political analyst for today, for he is an expert on both the legacies of Nazism and Communism. In spite of optimistic diagnoses and rampant wishful thinking, these two pathologies are not dead. Vladimir Tismaneanu s illuminating book is an antidote against new experiments in utopian radicalism and social engineering."--Ion Mihai Pacepa"WND" (07/08/2013)"

"The account provided is particularly strong on separating the critical paradigms of Marxism that emerged in East and West. . . . Getting the record straight here is important and challenges any simplistic notion of Eastern Europe s conversion to liberalism."--Richard Shorten"American Historical Review" (12/01/2013)"

From the Inside Flap
“Vladimir Tismaneanu combines enormous erudition, sharp insight, and unique personal experience in this wide-ranging essay on the problems of totalitarianism in the twentieth century. The Devil in History is mandatory reading for those interested in the crucial questions of morality and politics posed by the comparison of Nazism and Stalinism.” —Norman M. Naimark, Robert and Florence McDonnel Professor of Eastern European Studies, Stanford University

“The Devil in History is a lengthy essay on the intellectual origins, crimes, and failures of the twentieth century’s worst totalitarian types of regimes, fascism and communism. There are few scholars as conversant with this material, or as able to explain it as well, as Vladimir Tismaneanu, who gives a good sense of why utopian ideals meant to overcome the ills of capitalist, bourgeois democracy went so sensationally wrong and produced such massive evil.” —Daniel Chirot, co-author of Why Not Kill Them All? The Logic and Prevention of Mass Political Murder

"The Devil in History is a very important work of intellectual history that considers a basic question of the twentieth century and represents vast and ecumenical learning and well-considered personal experience. It has moments of indubitable brilliance." —Timothy Snyder, author of The Reconstruction of Nations: Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, 1569-1999

“In his revealing new study, Vladimir Tismaneanu traces the intellectual origins of the murderous twentieth century. The focus is on the ideologies of Europe’s totalitarian regimes identified most prominently with the names Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler. Although these characters were amoral and perhaps even psychopathic killers, the author rightly insists that such labels do not explain the popular appeal of the dictators, who were worshipped as if they were gods by crowds of true believers. Even after 1945, new Communist leaders pursued quests for utopia and mounted crusades of their own, all of them doomed to fail. Tismaneanu provides a compelling and convincing account of how this monumental tragedy came to pass.” —Robert Gellately, author of Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler: The Age of Social Catastrophe

Tismaneanu at his best!
By Peter Stone
Vladimir Tismaneanu is a celebrated writer who once described himself as "a scholar of the history of ideas." For some, that subject might sound kind of remote from real life; but certainly not for those who are aware that "ideas which seize the masses become a powerful material force." Tismaneanu's new book convincingly shows that history of ideas is a subject of vital importance for the fate of the world.

In the past one hundred years, our world has suffered from atrocities and destruction of unprecedented scope - all committed in the name of two utopian ideas, communism and fascism. This book examines the question how captivating ideas of philosophers could produce totalitarian regimes with their terrible inhuman practices.

This work marks a new level of excellence in Vladimir Tismaneanu's writing accomplishments. It has instantly gained international recognition and got featured by Times Higher Education as "the book of the week," praised for its "perceptive and intelligent analysis."

Hitler's and Stalin's totalitarian regimes are long gone, but not genocidal acts inspired by hatred and intolerance. Delusional and destructive ideas can still captivate many minds, especially immature or feeble. Hence, the timeliness of this book today. I strongly recommend it to both academic and non-academic readers.

Writing style hides many excellent insights
By Robert Ashton
Few are better qualified to "map and explain ... the "ideological storms" of a century second to none in violence, hubris, ruthlessness, and human sacrifices" as author Vladimir Tismaneanu. Professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Maryland, Tismaneanu was born in Communist Romania (his parents had fought in the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War) and he experienced first-hand the collapse of the Soviet system in Eastern Europe. Indeed, there is much of interest in this book particularly in highlighting the commonalities between Fascism and Communism and in his warnings of the dangers of resurgent nationalism. However, repetition, a very turgid style of writing and assumptions of familiarity with writers and critics from within Eastern Europe make sections of the book hard going, even for the reasonably well-informed reader.
The book, although looking at both Fascism and Marxism, is heavily weighted towards the Soviets. This is probably due to the author's own experiences but also to the fact that much of the excess of the Soviet experiment is only recently being fully explored. As Tismaneanu says: "the comparison between Communism and Fascism has been fundamentally tainted ... both by the claim of the original innocence of Leninism ... and by anti-Fascism's long-standing, resounding failure to denounce the murderousness and illiberality of Communist regimes." Some of this imbalance has been addressed by recent books such as "Lenin, Stalin and Hitler" by Robert Gellately and "Bloodlands" by Timothy Snyder, both quoted favorably by Tismaneanu. Although the focus on Communism is understandable I think more analysis of the Fascist regimes, including perhaps Spain and Portugal, would have been enlightening.
His core argument is that both Fascism and Communism had a shared goal of re-shaping the world through the destruction of modern liberal democracy and to, in essence, "build Heaven on Earth". Although one was based on racial purity and the other on class purity, both felt free to persecute and kill almost without constraint. Although the Marxists were clearly atheist and one can debate the religious position of Fascism: "(i)n fact, they were political religions, with their own rituals, prophets, saints, zealots, inquisitors, traitors, renegades, heretics, apostates, and holy writ." He highlights one of the major differences as being the importance and dominance of "the party" in Communism, which could survive changes in leadership (although the leader was very important), compared to the cult of the individual in Fascism. Obviously this aided the longevity of the Communist states but what would have happened in Germany or Italy is debatable. Both these regimes lost the war and a leadership transition never occurred.
This idea of the religious nature of the two philosophers repeats throughout the book, often really adding nothing new. This repetition is one of the issues I have with this book. The other major problem is the writing style. When I come across this type of writing from academics, I often wonder whether it comes from erudition or obfuscation. Whatever the cause, be warned that you will regularly come across sentences like this: "In other words, the historicity of Marxism, the moment of the Marxist self-consciousness was central to reinventing the true value of negativity as a new space for the affirmation of particularity against the spurious universality glorified by the system." (Author's italics)
In the end, Tismaneanu decries the totalitarian regimes for their abandonment of simple, established distinctions between good and evil. He says of the collapse of the Soviet system: "the core value restored, cherished and promoted by the revolutions of 1989 was common sense." This book contains a lot of very good analysis and draws many sensible and enlightening lessons from a terrible time. It is a pity that it is written in such a way as to discourage a wider readership.

TELL ALL BOOK ABOUT THE BOLSHIES
By R. E. Cohen
The Devil In History by Vladimir Tismaneanu is a terrific analysis of Leninism and Stalinism and how they stand in comparison to Nazism and Fascism. I am still in the middle of reading it and page by page it is revealing and illuminating. It also has a message for today - but no spoilers - read it!

William Shakespeare's The Empire Striketh Back (William Shakespeare's Star Wars), by Ian Doescher

The saga that began with the interstellar best seller William Shakespeare's Star Wars continues with this merry reimagining of George Lucas's enduring classic The Empire Strikes Back.

Many a fortnight have passed since the destruction of the Death Star. Young Luke Skywalker and his friends have taken refuge on the ice planet of Hoth, where the evil Darth Vader has hatched a cold-blooded plan to capture them. Only with the help of a little green Jedi Master—and a swaggering rascal named Lando Calrissian—can our heroes escape the Empire's wrath. And only then will Lord Vader learn how sharper than a tauntaun's tooth it is to have a Jedi child.

What light through Yoda's window breaks? Methinks you'll find out in the pages of The Empire Striketh Back!

These are the books you're looking for
By Canadian eReader
William Shakespeare’s Star Wars – The Empire Striketh Back by Ian Doescher is the sequel to William Shakespeare’s Star Wars, a retelling of George Lucas’s space saga in the style of William Shakespeare. I would strongly recommend picking this up as an audiobook rather than ebook or hard copy – Random House Audio’s production is top notch with an excellent cast. It is far more like a radio play than an audiobook and the excellent cast does a wonderful job of telling the story.

What I liked

The source material. The original Star Wars trilogy is a darn good story. It contains a lot of strong themes which would have been as relevant in Shakespeare’s time as today: love, betrayal, youthful impetuousness, struggle against tyranny. Doescher therefore has a strong base on which to base his adaptation. It also isn’t too jarring, for example, when Han rails against Lando’s betrayal in Shakespearean language as it is a theme and emotion found in many of Shakespeare’s works.

Yoda. On my first listen through I was a little disappointed that Yoda didn’t sound too different from the other characters. In the movies, he has a unique speech pattern and I was hoping that this would be reflected in Empire Striketh Back. It was only on reading Doescher’s commentary that I realised Yoda was speaking in haiku! Darn I wished I’d picked that up first time. This is intended to reflect Yoda’s role as Luke’s master – or sensei – in the mystical force giving an eastern feel to it. Brilliant. Appropriate and brilliant.

The production. Random House Audio has gone full out to make this a radio play rather than an audiobook. We have a strong cast, sound effects (including the iconic swish of the lightsabres) as well as snippets of John Williams’ memorable soundtrack. It all combines to make it a wonderful listen.

Doescher’s Notes and Commentary. I the ebook edition I also possess, Doescher adds some commentary explaining some of the creative decisions he made while writing Empire. This, combined with the teachers notes provides a fascinating new insight into the book.

What I didn’t like

There was nothing, I tell you, nothing i disliked about The Empire Striketh Back. I already have The Jedi Doth Return on pre-order. As the trailer says “these are the books you have been looking for.”

Trust your instincts, there are no Jedi mind tricks here, only great reading!
By TrinityTwo
(Trinitytwo’s Point of View from the Qwillery.blogspot.com *Reviewed the 3 books in the series together)

I am forgoing my usual short synopsis of the stories I review because in this case I think I am justified with assuming that most people already know a little something about the original Star Wars trilogy.

I’ve loved Star Wars since I saw the first film in 1977. Naturally, I jumped at the chance to review these books. However, I will admit to being a bit nervous about the “Shakespearean” component. Honestly, I admire the Bard and absolutely love Shakespearean theater, but given the choice it is not the first (or even second) book I would pull from a shelf to read. If you have similar fears, let me put them to rest: Ian Doescher’s triple combination of the beloved bard, George Lucas’ classic Star Wars saga, and a few of the author’s own secret ingredients creates one of the most enchanting and delightful series imaginable. This well-loved story written in Shakespearean style made the material fresh and exciting.

Pay special attention to the asides and soliloquies: they can be funny, poignant or sad but each gives a unique insight into character personality or motivations. I really love Doescher’s books the best when he shares our cherished character’s innermost thoughts. For instance, how does C-3PO really feel about R2-D2, or vice-versa? Haven’t we all wondered what Obi Wan was really thinking when he told Luke his father was killed by Darth Vader? Speaking of Vader, what are the thoughts behind that monstrous mask? Are Stormtroopers people with ideas and hopes, or just faceless soldiers? How did Luke and Leia feel when they found out they were siblings after their infamous kiss? Is the Emperor all bad? Doescher’s narrative resolves these mysteries and more.

I also want to take a moment to gush about the illustrations in all three volumes, drawn by the talented Nicholas Delort. They help readers to visualize their favorite characters in frilly ruffs and doublets and are absolutely brilliant.

Forget the nunnery and get thee to a bookstore (or Amazon) to pick up all three of these delightful tomes. Each one is a “must read,” so whether you are spending your summer in the sands (Tatooine), stuck at work (Death Star) or are on some exotic jungle adventure (Endor), you need to trust your instincts because there are no Jedi mind tricks here, only great reading!

Strongly Recommend
By Christopher Whitman
There really isn't anything that I could say that would influence a decision on purchasing this book. it's Star Wars, but written like Shakespeare! You literally cannot get anything better than that!

Obviously it would help if you have seen the movies before purchasing these books just so you have some baseline on what it originally was, but this is a great read and I am enjoying it immensely. Can't wait for the 3rd book to be released!

Overall: Would strongly recommend to a Star Wars fan looking for a laugh that has a slight appreciation for Shakespearean theater.

A Handful or Two of Good Ideas
By B. Hepp
This book was recommended in another book on facilitation. I did find several good ideas, and have since used some of those with good results. Like another reviewer here, I found the comments about what not to do and mistakes to avoid helpful. But I had hoped for more. Like other reviews I've read elsewhere, I found the 21 list framework a bit gimmicky and distracting. Overall, it was worth the price, though better books may be out there (but I still haven't found what I'm looking for ... at least in newer books). I have found a few older books, like "How to Make Meetings Work" and "Joining Together" just as helpful.

A millennium into the future two advancements have altered the course of human history:  the colonization of the galaxy and the creation of the positronic brain.  Isaac Asimov's Robot novels chronicle the unlikely partnership between a New York City detective and a humanoid robot who must learn to work together.  Like most people left behind on an over-populated Earth, New York City police detective Elijah Baley had little love for either the arrogant Spacers or their robotic companions.  But when a prominent Spacer is murdered under mysterious circumstances, Baley is ordered to the Outer Worlds to help track down the killer.  The relationship between Life and his Spacer superiors, who distrusted all Earthmen, was strained from the start.  Then he learned that they had assigned him a partner:  R. From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up—Isaac Asimov's mid-20th century tale artfully combines science fiction and detection. William Dufris performs it in multiple voices and with just enough camp to pull in contemporary listeners by playing to the ironies of the period in which the story was written. A human police detective, Baley, lives in New York City a thousand years hence. He's tapped to help solve a murder in a community where robots are not reviled and ends up with a partner, Daneel, who is a highly sophisticated, humanoid machine. Baley and Daneel don't have an easy time with each other or with those New Yorkers, called Medievalists, who despise robots. The action moves swiftly, yet there is time for Asimov to weave in some engaging and edifying glosses on the Bible as literature—and for Baley to smoke, making this as an adult book of the period. While most of Dufris's voices are successful, his interpretation of Baley's 16-year-old son reduces the latter to sounding like a whiney 8-year-old. Asimov's story is a great way to introduce young readers to a polymath who captured the "American century" through futurism and literate character development.—Francisca Goldsmith, Halifax Public Libraries, Canada

Groundbreaking in its times, a bit stale now
By Kindle Customer
This was a very original book at the time it was written and, read in perspective, it is still interesting. Unfortunately, with the host of more modern books on robots around, many of them by Asimov himself, it has become a bit stale. Asimov's writing is superb and the book is a cornerstone of the genre, but much of its entertainment value has been lost.

A True Classic
By T. Bensch
Caves of Steel is an amazing story and introduction to Asimov's Robot series. As much a detective thriller as it is a Sci-fi novel, it carefully develops the characters of Elijah Baley and R. Daniel Olivaw, and sets up story lines that reach their culmination in the intersection of the Robot, Empire, and Foundation series. A great read from an imaginative and talented author.

The best place to start reading Asimov
By ConsumerAdvocate (dakotad555) at (gmail) dot (com)
Its hard for me to imagine anyone NOT having read something by Asimov, he's that important to my individual experience as a reader of science fiction, but if you find yourself just getting into his writing, this is a fantastic place to start. There is little that I can say to praise this book that has not already been said better by other reviews. I will add that CAVES OF STEEL contains foundational concepts that are recurrent in all of Asimov's fiction. These include:

1. The extended consequences of artificial intelligence on society

2. The nature of being; what does it mean to exist? What does it mean to exist as a human once the creation of artificial intelligence has been achieved?

3. The distopian problems associated with urbanization and technological prowess.

4. The power struggle between those benefited by technology and those whom it hurts.

Easily among his best, CAVES OF STEEL remains a classic in the science fiction genre, and a must have to any Asimov fan.

The Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification continues to increase in popularity. Employers often require this certification because it proves applicants have mastered the ability to design, develop, implement, and support solutions with Microsoft products and technologies. Computer professionals who become Microsoft Certified are recognized as experts and are sought after industry-wide. Having MCSE credentials increases an administrator's salary potential by thousands of dollars. In order to obtain their MCSE, candidates are required to pass six exams-four core exams and two elective exams. This curriculum is very rigorous and extremely challenging. The MCSE exams, which cost $100 each, are much more difficult than the Novell CNE exams. Candidates are in need of a complete, concise, inexpensive study guide to fully prepare them to pass the exams.

This Was a Necessary Book to Get at the Time But of Limited Value
By A dad
I took and passed the SQL Server Database Design Exam. But after having got through the SQL Server Database Administration Exam, which I thought was much more difficult, mainly because they weren't great materials to help one prepare for the actual exam questions, I worked very hard before I sat for this exam.

At the time, there were a handful of books to prepare oneself for this exam, and I got all of them. Once I saw what this book was, the way it was organized and the quality of the sections, I immediately rejected all but the practice questions and exams along with their answers and explanations. I still think that was the only truly worthwhile aspect of this book.

The actual exam didn't have one question from any of my books. I continue to believe that Microsoft created so many versions of the exam and that it did not work with any of these authors and publishers that all such books were of very limited value. The actual Microsoft Press material were great for learning SQL Server database design, but didn't prepare one for the actual exam questions. Therefore, one had to practice using such books as this Training Guide just to try to anticipate questions.

One of the WORST technical books I have ever read!
By John P.
Pure JUNK! I flew through 5 other books for my MCSE, this is my 6th and one of the worst technical books I have EVER read.
The first chapter is a absolutely excellent introduction to relational databases and follows a very good real-world example. Chapter 2 is about files and stuff and is OK.
Chapter 3 is a DISASTER! It is PAINFULLY unclear that what you are doing in this chapter is implementing the theory you learned in chapter 1. Why couldn't the author just state that in a simple sentence? First you are told about data types and how to create tables, that's fine.
Then you are told about constraints. This is it. This is what relational databases are build on. If you don't get this, the no MCSE for you, its off to "do you want fries with that?"
You are NEVER EVER told that you have the option of using the word CONSTRAINT. It IS an optional part of the CREATE TABLE syntax and therefore should be included in the definition -- but it is completely omitted from this book.
The first example of a constraint is on the bottom of p107 and of course doesn't use the word CONSTRAINT so you don't have the foggiest idea what the heck this statement means. To make matters much worse, in this first example the terms CHECK and DEFAULT show up. Hmm. What do those mean? OH! Those are actual constraint terms! They just so happen to be first introduced about 10 pages later. Gee, thanks!
So you're not told that what you are doing is implementing what was introduced in chapter 1, you are not told about the optional term which makes it easier to read the expression, and the example you are given does not use that word but does use some other terms you will be introduced to later. At this point it is IMPOSSIBLE TO FOLLOW THE TEXT. (Unless of course you already know this stuff, as a number of other reviewers said they did -- this is my first book on SQL.)
Oh wait a minute, I take that back, the term CONSTRAINT is shown, on the next page, in an example, with no explanation, still using those other terms that have not yet been introduced, while trying to introduce the table vs column concept, still making it IMPOSSIBLE TO FOLLOW THE TEXT. Could there be a worse condemnation of a technical book?
So after going through this crushingly convoluted introduction to constraints, do you think at least we could get into them? No of course not. Lets stick in about 3 pages about the Identity column just so you really lose track of where you are! Then a whole bunch of mumbo jumbo, then finally, almost without introduction you are into the first of the constraints, the Primary Key constraint.
Primary Key constraint. What's that? Lets see... hmmm... OH YA! The 'Relational' in Relational Database has something to do with that there Primary Key thing, doesn't it? Probably need one of them before you can git yerself one of them there Foreign Keys, or something.
So don't you think that, when you are introduced to the way in which you actually create a Foreign Key you should be reminded that this is how you relate tables in a relational database? Not a chance. You are first shown how to relate tables in a SQL Server 7 relational database on page 115. You are told, "The FOREIGN KEY constraint is used to enforce referential integrity between tables." Read that sentence again. Are you snoring yet?
What the text SHOULD say is, "Finally we are going to show you how to relate tables together, the whole basis of the relational database model, by using the FOREIGN KEY constraint."
Never before have I read a book that would go off on tangents and drill deep down into the details while completely omitting the big picture necessary to put those details into context.
Then there are the dozens of extremely annoying things like, right there on page 115, in case you're not confused enough, the first bullet says, "For cross database referential integrity, use a trigger." Gee thanks! Triggers are introduced on page 361, with ZERO explanation here! Now that is really clear, thanks dude. A little one-sentence explanation saying that I know we haven't talked about triggers yet but we will in chapter whatever, but basically a trigger is a ...
Another one like that, on page 281 there is a big headline "Using a Stored Procedure with INSERT" Of course, stored procedures are introduced on page 348. I don't know dude, but the planet I'm from, we're not born knowing what a stored procedure is. You?
Page 94 says that, "as a rule, fields that require fewer than 20 characters should be fixed length" meaning they should use CHAR rather than VARCHAR. Page 100 shows you an example with LastName varchar(30). Perfect. Page 108 shows you an example with LastName char(30). Wrong-O, according to your rule. There are tons of examples of this stuff.
So in summary, this book is nearly impossible to follow when it explains the most important concepts, has many little annoying problems, as well as lots of problems with explaining things that you won't know unless you already know them.
Again, one of the worst technical books, EVER!

Good choice for a big book. You'll also need a small one.
By Dr. Robert C.A. Goff, MCSD, MCSE, MCDBA
Like a visit to the Wizard of Oz, every exam candidate sees a different 70-029 exam. The main thrust of my 3 hour exam was (pretend there is no SQL 7 Server GUI) recognizing how various tasks and procedures are accomplished in T-SQL, and their uses and consequences. This is in sharp contrast to 70-028, which tests your facility with the GUI. And there are data structures to interpret, and maybe some ugly BCP and more practical DTS questions.
Besch, et al. do a good job of focusing on T-SQL approaches, while mentioning the alternative GUI tools. I found the text comfortable and readable. Their treatments of data modeling and creating physical storage are excellent. Physical design is a little tougher reading, but the material is covered fairly well. The chapter on indexing is comprehensive, except for the discussion of Full-Text searches.
While the BCP (Bulk Copy Program) is a powerful, but horrid thing to learn and use, with its dozens of optional parameters and flags, the book's explanation of it is about as lucid as you are likely to find. It will make you grateful for the new DTS (the GUI Data Transformation Services), which is not covered in sufficient detail, though just as likely to show up on the exam.
The several chapters on structures of the SQL language cover a vast amount of territory, and cover it fairly well. Database maintenance is addressed in a cursory way.
WEAKNESSES: The SQL language chapters (and some other areas) rely too heavily on formal syntax diagrams -- the kind that show all the possible choices of required and optional parameters of a given statement. While these are great for future reference, they make some pretty difficult reading when you are first learning SLQ. You'll have to expend some calories to translate the diagrams into reality. In some areas the subsequent examples provide adequate clarification. In others, the reader is left with the vague malaise of fuzzy theory. Replication and security are significantly slighted. The details of the workings of DTS are inadequate. The "Review Questions" (different from the "Exam Questions") often expect knowledge that has not yet been (and sometimes never will be) covered. But the info is usually useful in the answers provided.
The examples contrasting Full-Text predicates vs Full-Text functions are not sufficient. The important series of steps required to set up and use Full-Text search are left unclear. A numbered list of essential steps would have been useful.
Coverage of optimization of execution plans and Server Profiler is only marginally adequate.
IF YOU ARE NEW to SQL Server, the condensed nature of any exam book will leave gaps in your understanding. I would strongly encourage you to read a second, smaller book, like Exam Cram, after completing this one. It will clarify the fuzzy spots and provide a different perspective on the material. Regardless, you will need to take notes and maybe do some flash cards (home made) to congeal all the knowledge. But take heart in the certainty that you'll be able to apply much of the data structure knowledge to exam 70-100 (Solutions Architectures).
STRENGTHS: In addition to the good things mentioned above, the Fast Facts final review chapter is wonderful. The end of chapter exam questions do a good (though slightly buggy) job of reviewing the types of information that will be tested, though the format is not quite right.
CONCLUSION: Despite its shortcomings, I really liked this book. Consider a "small" book as an adjunct. Take notes. Look up fuzzy syntax in the Books On Line. And, by all means, run the SQL exercises in Query Analyzer.
