Narrator Stanley Tucci's sober, ascetic style overburdens this attempt to portray the contrasting and conflicting worlds of affluent white and impoverished black communities through the story of the drowning of a black boy, Eric McGinnis, in Michigan's St. Joseph River. The saga fails not for the subject, but for the quality of writing. The author's prose strives for authenticity, but it is really focused on stylistic devices. Kotlowitz hopes to generate intrigue by repeatedly presenting the same possibilities for the death of the boy. Was he killed by the police for breaking into a car? Was he murdered for dancing with a white girl? Was he part of a street gang? Did he kill himself accidentally, or deliberately? This contrived exercise in social consciousness tells us nothing about the complex reality of life on either side of the color line or on either side of the river. I stay in the St Joe MI area during the summer. I thought this would be a good read in view of the police and racial tension going on now. I found it slow moving and a little tedious at times.

okay but flawed

well-written and easy to read, but degenerates into just a series of anecdotes. Why? The author has no moral compass and not only admits it, but celebrates it as a liberal virtue. "Truth depends on what race you are" he expressly says. This is not only an infinitely sad statement, but also explains why this book has no center and is all frosting and no cake. Enjoy it skeptically.
