About the Author
Susan Wise Bauer is a writer, teacher, and historian. Her books include The Story of Science: From the Writings of Aristotle to the Big Bang Theory, The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home, The Well-Educated Mind: A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had, the History of the World series (W. W. Norton) and the Story of the World series (Well-Trained Mind Press). She has a Ph.D. in American Studies from the College of William & Mary in Virginia, as well as an M.A. in seventeenth-century literature and a Master of Divinity in Ancient Near Eastern Languages and Literature. For fifteen years, she taught literature and composition at the College of William and Mary. She lives in Virginia.

Elizabeth Rountree has taught elementary school children for more than ten years. She lives and works outside of Richmond, Virginia.

The missing link

As a CTO of a company that develops machine learning software(Analytics 1305), I always find it challenging to convince business people about the value of machine learning. Even the scientists in Business intelligence, mainly statisticians, find it hard to understand what machine learning can do. This is because in order to make a connection of their background to machine learning they need to put a lot of effort to read one of the bulky machine learning books. This is not easy since scientists in business intelligence are super busy and they don't have the time to read machine learning theory and translate it to their language.

This book bridges the gap. It speaks the language of machine learning with the "accent" of business intelligence/(industrial and systems engineering). It has helped us tremendously to educate and market our clients about the value of machine learning. It has also helped us (machine learning people) to understand better the business intelligence area. There are a lot of books that talk about analytics/data mining in a very high level. This one talks about the stuff that actually work and have made netflix, amazon, google and yahoo successful companies. I highly recommend this book.

I'm so in love with Ace it hurt my soul this book ended. This book was good from beginning to end just like parts 1&2. The best part was Aaliyah tagging Sunshine ass! I don't want to give more away so go get it and find out how good it was good yourself. Great job Jazmyne!!

This was fiyah, Ace had a team of true soilders holding him down and they had a crew of ladies who was down for there men. No questions asked, that dam Aaliyah was the epick woman. She had me sitting on the front row of the big screen. Amir was the true definitions of a BOSS, a MAN and a FATHER. Like he said all he has is his word and he kept ut at every turn. Loved this whole series. Sunshine gave being a mother a whole new outlook with her actions, selfish is an under statement for her character. Sad but true many woman act as she did, everyday. Adam all i can say is, jealousy is the devil. He wanted to be his brother so bad but he wasnt cut out to walk a mile in Ace shoes bfore he would be ready to tuck his tail and crawl in a hole. Jvion, no commen, gma always said if you cant say nothing nice say nothing at all and my words are R RATED when it comes to him and Parker. Yeah for those picky readers, who act like they havent ever made a mistake. Enjoy mine and Get over yourselves, l mean really every book can't be perfect as long as you enjoy the story and know what the author is trying to say thats all that matters. Jazmyne this was my first series by you, I asure you it want be my last. You did a very good job, characters were well developed, the story came together nicely you keep shining I see great things in your future between the pages of your books.

This was a very good story they had to go through all that too get too there happy ending I love this series with all my heart I love the relationship that ace and Aaliyah have there bond was strong one thing I can say for sure ace had some real true friend on his team I respect them for what they did for him and there woman that was holding them down damn I hated that it had too end but it's worth it 5 stars all the way must read

amusing contemporary romance

After her half-sister Laurel steals her boyfriend, upset and humiliated Jamie Newman leaves New York to spend the summer at a nice cottage on Seaside Cove, North Carolina away from her dependent family. There she plans to renew her batteries and look at where her life is going starting with ridding herself of her drama queen mom, Laurel and her niece as well as managing the family restaurant.

However, her pleasant bungalow turns out to be a dump. Worse the horde she left in New York followed her to the barrier island as the three females plead with Jamie to rectify their issues. Meanwhile Jamie is attracted to her annoying cottage landlord Nick Trent. He wants a summer fling with his renter who will return to New York so he can hide his past from the woman he desires.

This is an amusing contemporary romance due to a strong cast. The lead couple is a nice pairing who brings an engaging romantic subplot with a touch of intrigue re his secret to the mix. However, her family of Three Stoogettes provides an eccentric jocularity yet also contains a serious theme that focuses on the emotional dependency of the trio on the problem fixer who is a codependent with her need to be needed. This is a wonderful family drama.

Summer at Seaside Cove - A Joyfully Recommended Title

Jamie Newman has had it! She is constantly taking care of everyone else and falling into things without ever really doing what she wants to do. She has dreams and goals, but since she takes care of all around her she hasn't realized any of them. Finding out that her skinnier, materialistic, OLDER half-sister, Laurel, has been cheating with her current beau is the last straw! Reeling from this bitter betrayal Jamie takes a long overdue vacation to Seaside Cove to reassess, regroup and just find herself. Paradise Lost was supposed to be a cutesy cheap rental, but upon arrival she finds a run-down, in-desperate-need-of-renovation rental that smells as though something crawled inside it and died, was revived, and then died again! Feeling as though if she didn't have bad luck she wouldn't have any luck at all, she finds solace in the only salvageable thing in her dreary world. A bottle of vodka in the freezer! Jamie sits up in her leaky rental, staring out the window all night, and waiting for her landlord to return from his latest bender - only now she looks and smells like she has been on a bender!

Nicholas Trent never realized that the realtor he used to list his property did a bait and switch with internet pictures in order to get a renter. He believed Jamie was embellishing a story and he wasn't too thrilled to find her on his porch bright and early the next morning demanding restitution in some form. Nick found Jamie to be bossy and demanding and felt she was a princess from New York who just couldn't be bothered with "roughing" it. But man she did something to him and he found himself unable to fight his growing attraction to her. Wanting to spend time with her over the summer vacation, but afraid to tell her the complete truth about himself; he glosses over his past leaving out much of the details and just gets to know her in the present.

Summer at Seaside Cove was a breathtaking story with likeable characters that had so much chemistry bubbling between them that you just wanted to watch them mix it up! I have to say Summer at Seaside Cove started off slow, but the minute Nick Trent answered that door in unbuttoned Levi's and bedhead (he had me then and I didn't care if he was on a bender the night before!) and I was prepared to watch the show! Of course Jamie's problems follow her, but they were so funny. Who would have thought that her 46-year-old mother would have a FWB (friends with benefits)? One who is younger and has managed to knock her up too - can you say cougar? Who would have imagined that Jamie's niece would have made her way down to the rental just to be with her loving aunt because she doesn't have that type of relationship with her mother? And let's not forget the lovely betrayer, Laurel. Even she shows up looking to make amends and give explanations for her behavior. The cast of characters in this book are quite enjoyable to read about; they are very friendly and open with their own beliefs and idiosyncrasies and just add more to Summer at Seaside Cove.

Summer at Seaside Cove's flirty dialogue and sexual innuendo is sizzling! I couldn't wait for Nick and Jamie to "hook up" and see how hot their sparks can glow. I never would have imagined that there could be sexual connotations with a nail and a screw - as in building supplies. But there is and I tell you, it had me chuckling. I loved the explanation of "Oh bless your heart" as well. That is a good little phrase to use, but now we are on to you! When Nick offered to show her his if she shows him hers when he catches her staring at something she should not be looking at, (oh my) you could just feel her cheeks flush; perhaps because we have all been there at one time or another. I also liked Nick's insight of being a puppet. I know Jamie didn't like it at first, but I think she came to realize that it was true. So I would have to say that Jacquie D'Alessandro applied some hard truths into Summer at Seaside Cove that readers can actually apply to their lives. That helped to make this story even more rewarding, at least for me.

I have to say that I really didn't care about Nick's past because he was just so hot and distracting when he interacted with Jamie. Usually you want to know about the character's background, but because of the great chemistry and camaraderie, in Summer at Seaside Cove you really didn't care! The past was definitely the past and you lived for the present and the future in Summer at Seaside Cove. I couldn't wait for these two to give into their physical attraction and end this dance because I just knew it will be like the fourth of July in book form!

I did have one complaint about Summer at Seaside Cove though. I felt that perhaps Jamie should have taken a little more time and Laurel should have had to grovel a bit more for forgiveness. Laurel's explanation spoke of jealousy, which was a copout on Laurel's behalf, and had taken time to form and yet, I felt as though Jamie had harbored some jealousy of her own as well. Because of this explanation it made it harder to believe that Laurel could just let something that had been festering for years go in a month! Of course the thorn comes before the rose, but it makes it that much more painful when the thorn is your half-sister! So yeah Jamie had a bit of suffering in order to find her HEA. I know what Jacquie D'Alessandro was getting at about forgiving someone and letting go of the hate, but I think it should have taken more time. Perhaps in the next book we will see that Laurel actually had to work harder at regaining the ground she lost with her half-sister because of her betrayal. I Joyfully Recommend Summer at Seaside Cove for the above reasons and so many more!

Funny, enjoyable

I have never read any of Ms. D'Alessandro's books, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Did not want to put it down and I'm very disappointed that the sequel will not be available until 2012. The characters are engaging and fun, the book didn't have a lot of draggy moments, it stayed pretty well on track and a surprise happened regularly with the continual appearance of family members she was trying to take a break from. I found the story to be amusing and funny. I think this is one of those books you just hate to see end.

A tender, touching tale

I have to disagree with the other two reviewers, enough to prompt me to write my very first review here. The Aviator is a lovely tale set during those early daring days of mail flights in small biplanes. The trips were dangerous, information on weather enroute was minimal, frequently obtained by calling farmers that lived along the route for local weather conditions. No radios, no cockpit instruments for in cloud flights, no cockpit heating and nav instruments but a paper chart and a clock. And no reliable engines (in a modern sense). Business as usual, back then.

The main character is a mail pilot cut off from the world after a bad accident that left him with more guilt than he could bear. And a bad scar in his face to remind him. He didn't have to look at the mirror to be reminded, he just had to see the look on everyone's face when they stared at him. After his soon to be wife left him, he hid from any kind of human contact by spending the most time in the sky as possible, becoming the most eficient and reliable pilot Moravia, the line's manager had.

In comes the little girl, who wanted to see the world like birds do, so she could describe it to her blind grandfather. A little girl with a huge heart and strong personality, that didn't look away in disgust at the first sight of the aviator's scar.

This is a story of a man who, afer being hidden from the world and from any kind of warm human relationships for a long time, finds himself forced to deal with his repressed ability to love and protect, when he crashlands in an remote valey during a winter storm and injures his passenger.

The way that, despite her injuries, the enduring little girl manages to melt the thick ice in his heart and "bring him back into the light" and the dialogs between the two while the aviator reads her mail letters to keep her distracted from the pain and hunger are memorable to me. Overall this is a tender and heart lifting tale.

Together with the amazing "Fate is the Hunter" (an autobiographic tale), I've kept this as one of my favourite aviation stories.

Good insight into early aviation

Ernest K. Gann was a "pilot's pilot" and wrote many novels that proved it. This one is set in 1928 and tells the story of a then-modern-day "pony express" rider-a U.S. Mail pilot whose plane goes down in the Rocky Mountains during a bout of bad weather. He also had a passenger on the trip: an intellectual 11-year-old girl traveling to visit relatives, whose parents wanted her to see the world from the air instead of sending her by a safer mode of travel. (Could anything be less safe than riding in a front well of a plane, on top of a bunch of mail sacks, wearing a helmet that's apparently several sizes too big?) They both survive the crash, but she is severely injured. The story of the search for them and how they cope with their situation is fascinating.

Aviation was relatively new in 1928; it was also a whole lot scarier than today and essentially the Wild West in terms of safety. Pilots of that time were truly adventurers. They had no radar; radio contact was rare, as were runways; there was no air traffic control, and no Weather Channel. They had to figure out themselves where they were, based on visible landmarks, past experience and gut instinct. And they did all of this while flying machines that, though beautifully designed for what they were doing, also seem to have been incredibly fragile. Gann had a gift for description, and an obvious love for his subject matter, so this "primitive" world of flight comes alive in his writing. When he described the planes as being made of "wood, fabric and wire" I got a picture in my mind that made my stomach do flip-flops.

As the daughter of a pilot, I've always believed that they fly because they love it and can't imagine doing anything else. To those of us who don't share that lust it can seem a bit insane, and a book like this gives us a glimpse into the minds of these "flyboys." Very well done.

Six degrees of seperation.

Earnest K. Gann was born in 1910 and myself in 1954 which places me about three generations younger. Oddly my first airplane ride was in Rockland County, NY the same county where he lived and learned to fly back in the 1930's. My life and eventual flying career took me out west and in and out of Washington State's San Juan Islands where Mr. Gann led a pastoral life and my home is now Boise, Idaho area the central location of this novel.

My appreciation for this book is the six degrees of separation coincidences between myself and the author and more importantly that Earnest K. Gann stuck to his craft and wrote this story in the sunset of his life. I suspect his motivation was to present the history of United Airline's humble beginnings as Varney Airlines and to highlight his own intimacy with the terrain in the story. My own local experience confirms that it is obvious that he knew the region quite well both from the air and the ground. Just adjacent to Boise State's Bronco Stadium there is a historical marker celebrating the original sight of the Boise Airport and the founding of United Airlines.

If at times there were facets of the plot that do not reconcile with 2011 safety practices like seat belts etc as a previous reviewer pointed out, we must remember that this was a different time. The moments that the plot is pushed along I forgive based on Gann's previous body of work. This is an author that needs to be appreciated as a genre and not taken one novel at a time. I highly recommend his autobiography "A Hostage to Fortune" for further insight into all of his works.

5++ “I’m married to them” Stars!!

!!!!SPOILER ALERT!!!! Do not read this review without reading the first two books in this series

One of my favorite stories has come to an end and I am happy and sad. Happy, happy, happy with that ending, but so sad to see Cal/Chris and Lauren go. This series has been a wild rollercoaster ride that I have loved every moment of. Book 1 threw me for a loop with the whole Cal/Chris ending. And then book 2 broke my heart as Lauren learned the truth and tried to figure out where to go next. Then Beautifully Broken took it to a whole new level with all the past coming out!!

“Does he decide? Do you decide? Is there a ******* schedule that I can get a copy of? Because this is insane.”

Many lives are changed in Beautifully Broken when Cal comes back in the picture, and all the secrets start to SLOWLY come out! And, wow, we aren’t just rocked once with a whopper, we are given TWO shocking secrets that change everything for Cal/Chris. And Lauren…I felt so bad for her, but yet was so pleased with the way she handled everything about this series. She handled everything with such maturity, when I would have thrown my hands in the air and walked away from that disaster. LOL!!

“He looks broken and I think I broke him. I broke Cal and I broke Chris.”

I am usually all about the alpha bad boy character, but found myself pulling for Chris ever since book 2. I know, I know, they are the same person but I totally fell for Chris’s compassionate personality…plus, he did have a little alpha in there somewhere if Cal came from him ;) And in Beautifully Broken he finally got it together and decided it was time for him to take his life back, which made me admire him even more.

“This isn’t the end of the world. It’s just split my world in two. That’s all. I have to get it together.”

As I said before, Lauren’s character was one of my all-time favorite female characters. She had such maturity, spunk, understanding, and kindness. The girl put up with so much more than any one wife should ever have to. And for the most part, always did it with class. Her support and patience is what won me over in this story. There was no annoying whiney female, except Jenna, and that made this reader very happy.

“After everything I thought that we could all get our happy ending, but the longer this goes on the more it looks like no one’s going to get it.”

I swear this series has to be one of my all-time favorites and I really am sad to see it end. I sure hope the author has more ideas ready to go, because I can’t wait to get my hands on more of her work :)

Great series!!

I love it when I can find a book that isn't predictable, which is rare, this series wasn't predictable in the least. It has every element you could want. It felt a bit like a roller coaster ride with ups and downs and sudden jerks to the side, I loved it. I wasn't sure how the writer was going to pull off the ending of this but she did it perfectly. Would definitely recommend to others!

I downloaded the first book in this series for free just looking for something new to read....it sucked me in and I read the first two and a half books in a matter of two days and impatiently awaited this one for a couple months! It didn't disappoint! I highly recommend this book and series
