David Larson, M.D. is an integrative medicine physician, leadership seminar facilitator, and life hacker. He studied business at Brown University before spending a year in Spain on a Fulbright Fellowship and then working in rural India in the public health sector. He then attended USC School of Medicine and graduated with highest distinction, earning the Alpha Omega Alpha merit scholarship. He is currently in his final year of postgraduate medical training at UCSD, pursuing 3 residencies in Family Medicine, Psychiatry, and Integrative Medicine.

The 4-hour workweek of medical school

This is the approach to medical school as if written by Tim Ferriss, which is fine. It conforms to the convention of the genre with lots of verbage and bombastic excitement for what amounts to a small amount of real material. Limit your resources, use flash cards and spaced repetition, and don't let your overachieving peers drag you down. It's the "life-hacking" approach to studying, but the book includes exactly 0% of the other parts of medical school outside of studying: any real specifics about study resources, summer after first year, anything specific to the boards, *anything* about clerkships, *anything* about applying for residency, etc etc. This is just about how to study. If you want to know about medical school itself, you'll have to look elsewhere. The nutritional pseudoscience and wellness stuff is also +/-.

If you need someone to help you orient your mindset, then this book will do the trick. And the study methods are fine, but while the "typical" medstudent Larson refers to does exist (the "gunner"), it's a bit of a straw man to compare his method against. Most people I knew in med school where nothing like what he describes.

I also am not a big fan of the numerous five star reviews blatantly from family and friends, including what looks like one of Larson's grandparents. Cheapens the book.

Grateful for this helpful guide

This book was incredibly useful to me! I know that some of the reviews on here are the authors friends, I have no connection to the author whatsoever. I only found the book through my research into crafting an efficient study method for med school. I am about to enter into my first year so I can't vouch for the effectiveness of the methods as of yet, but if nothing else I have received from this book a great foundation on which to build my own personal practice for studying in med school while seeking to maintain a balanced life. The book also really helped me define and refine my personal goals.

The one flaw with this book is that it is riddled with typos and grammatical errors. Even one instance of the cardinal sin of using the wrong "you're." I think that the author should have had some more people proofread his book before publishing it. That being said, I am leaving the review five stars because I would never want people to be put off from reading this supremely helpful book because of a few grammatical issues. Dr. Larson, if you are reading this review, you should come out with a Medical School 2.1 which resolves these little issues :).

Great for new med students!

Really wish this had been out when I was in school! I'm now in residency, so unfortunately didn't get to use this when I was in class. But after hearing some folks talking about it in the hospital I checked it it out and am now giving it to a friend as an Xmas gift. Definitely recommend for anyone starting med school!

I read Kaufman's book in a graduate class on assessment and intelligence testing. I still refer to it whenever I have unusual test scores with a WISC-III. It explains in a comprehensive and clear manner how a competent psychologist should interpret the WISC-III. It is worth every penny.

Richard Dawkins, Emeritus Fellow of New College, Oxford, is one of the most influential science writers and communicators of our generation. Dawkins at this best. Great book.

Great classic and an amazing book.
Richard Dawkins is an amazing author and scientist and his ideas, especially considering the time the book was written, are impressive.
I discovered this book after reading Genome, by Matt Ridley (another great book), and was pleasantly surprised by Richard Dawkins writing style, his ideas (I was blown away by the Meme idea) and how he explains them. In this book, the gene, is the central character, and Dawkins explains how evolution and adaptations have the objective of replicating and perpetuating such self-replicating entities. In this context bodies are survival machines used only to help with the process of replicating and perpetuating the genes.
The audiobook for the book, read by Dawkins himself and his wife Lala Ward, is also amazing and I really recommend it.

How has this got only two reviews? This book is excellent, truly one of Dawkins best works (a close second to The God Delusion). This editions epilogue is glorious (sad to know that there probably won't be a 50th year anniversary one written by Richard) anybody who wants to learn about evolution should definitely read this!

Loaded with common sense ideas.

In this book you will read suggestions like, "if you're not really a fan of all things Disney, than a Disney cruise may not be for you" (not an exact quote). If I'm considering a Disney cruise, I'm probably a fan of Disney. There were some useful tips to be found here but, overall, it's mostly common sense. Love to gamble. Disney only offers Bingo. Children bother you? Disney ships are full of them. Like to smoke? There is extremely limited areas where you can. Disney is "family" focused so understand that they spend a great deal of effort producing entertainment for a family experience. Disney does offer a great deal of "adult only" entertainment but be realistic. These are the types of items covered in this book. Buy this book if you haven't read any other Disney vacation planning books for adults.

A great book about something I love

The author, Barbara Nefer, has taken 80 Disney cruises without children. If anybody knows how nice the Disney cruises are, she does. January of 2012, my husband and I took a Disney cruise without children because our son is 28, and we are taking another Disney cruise this winter. I have read many of Barbara's books about Disney, and they are all worth buying. She loves Disney, and so do I.

Grace I. Kunz is Associate Professor Emerita at the Textiles and Clothing department of Iowa State University. She is a member of the International Textile and Apparel Association, the American Apparel Manufacturers Association, the American Collegiate Retailing Association, Iowa Textile and Apparel Association and Pan-Pacific Business Association. Her teaching and research interests include apparel technology, assortment planning, merchandising, product development and global issues. Her findings have been published in the Journal of Fashion Marketing and Management, Clothing and Textiles Research Journal and Journal of Small Business Strategies, among others.

In this sweeping historical narrative, Barbara Tuchman writes of the cataclysmic 14th century, when the energies of medieval Europe were devoted to fighting internecine wars and warding off the plague. Some medieval thinkers viewed these disasters as divine punishment for mortal wrongs; others, more practically, viewed them as opportunities to accumulate wealth and power. One of the latter, whose life informs much of Tuchman's book, was the French nobleman Enguerrand de Coucy, who enjoyed the opulence and elegance of the courtly tradition while ruthlessly exploiting the peasants under his thrall. Tuchman looks into such events as the Hundred Years War, the collapse of the medieval church, and the rise of various heresies, pogroms, and other events that caused medieval Europeans to wonder what they had done to deserve such horrors.

Excellent book. I have read books on this very strange century and this is with out doubt one of the best. You do have to like history which by nature can be dry at times. She does a very good job keeping it alive and interesting.

Warts 'n all history lesson!

This book is long, detailed, with a host of characters who's names are almost impossible to remember. It was a tough read & I have to admit that I had to intersperse the reading of it, with a couple of "lighter" books on the side. Worthwhile though? I'll say! Tuchman has a style that brings one intimately into the world she is describing. I felt chastened by the suffering of the Black death victims, exhausted by the toil of the peasants & angered by the corruption of just about everyone else. Churchmen who sold the services that should have been freely given, many of whom shamefully refused to give plague victims last rites for fear of contagion. Nobles & knights oppressed the people they were supposed to protect. Kings & princes made pacts with each other that were never intended to be honoured. Honour, indeed, is a quality almost non-existant in these troubled times. The book describes all the trials & tribulations of 14th. century life. It's proper "warts 'n all stuff! The battles, revolutions, intrigues, tortures & the daily struggle just to get through to the next day. I particularly enjoyed learning of the main "pillars of Chivalry." Whilst one might expect to assume "valour" as a quality, try "knightly love," which was pretty much a license to go off & indulge in loose living. Marvelous! It's a demanding read but absolutely worth the effort.
