*Winner of the 1943 Pulitzer Prize for Biography*

Admiral of the Ocean Sea is Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison's classic biography of the greatest sailor of them all, Christopher Columbus. It is written with the insight, energy, and authority that only someone who had himself sailed in Columbus' path to the New World could muster. Morison undertook this expedition in a 147-foot schooner and a 47-foot ketch, the dimensions of these craft roughly matching those of Columbus' Santa Maria and NiƱa. The result is this vivid and definitive biography that accurately details the voyages that, for better or worse, changed the world.

Enlightening and entertaining
By STEPHEN MATTOX
This was one of the most enjoyable biographies I've read. The most distinguishing thing about this book of course is the fact that Morison recreated the voyages before his writing the book. This recreation lends credibility to his writing. But more than that, it makes much of the book, particularly those parts at sea, seem as if the reader is experiencing the voyages through the person of Columbus. Not only the particulars of what he saw, but the smells of land breezes, the feel of the trade winds, the motion of the boat. Morison's obvious love of the sea and of sailing work very much in his favor. Another strength is the historical perspective carefully provided by Morison. Knowing what was going on with Catholic Spain during Columbus' life (the defeat of the Moors, the expulsion of the Jews, political intrigue and conflict involving France, England, Portugal, and others) helps to explain the motivations of Columbus and his contemporaries. I was a bit wary of a 60-year old book, Pulitzer or no Pulitzer, in light of the more recent reconsiderations of Columbus. Some people would have us believe that the voyage of 1492 was some sort of original sin inflicted upon the paradise that was the western hemisphere. But in his preface, Morison makes it clear that he is concerned with Columbus, the "man of action", and is leaving analyses of his motivations to others. And at any rate, Morison's sensibilities are very much in tune with those of the year 2000. He makes few apologies for Columbus and takes him to task where warranted, particularly for his treatment of the natives. One chapter, "Hell in Hispaniola", is almost exclusively devoted to this area. One word of warning: If your knowledge of sailing isn't good, then you may want to bone up on some of the rudiments before starting this book. Morison provides an explanation of some of the terminology, but not enough for someone who knows as little about sailing as I did coming in. But please don't be put off by that - this book is a real pleasure.

A great sailor's life in a biography which has aged well
By Rick Hunter
Samuel Eliot Morison's Admiral of the Ocean Sea: A Life of Christopher Columbus won the Pulitzer Prize in 1942, and does not seem the least dated 55 years later. What sets Morison's biography apart from most is that Morison himself is a sailor, and he draws on his own knowledge of ships, currents, and men to bring Columbus to life. Morison (and, through him, his reader) is constantly amazed at how good Columbus was at dead reckoning in unknown waters, and what a superb handler of ships and men he was. However, this is not a hagiography, and Morison does not shy away from Columbus' lapses in judgment (to the end, he convinced himself that he had reached the Indies) and mistakes. Six years ago, of course, was the 500th anniversary of Columbus' initial voyage, and I remember a deluge of articles and books -- mostly attacking dead white European males -- being published to note the event. I suspect that Morison's biography was roundly attacked at that time. I would be interested to dig up those books and articles to see what they say. For me, however, regardless of the current fashions or trends of scholarship, Morison's biography remains a marvelous tale, stunningly told. I recommend this book highly!

How Times Have Changed For Cristobal Colon
By givbatam3
Morison wrote this fine book in honor of the 450'th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America. I think Morison would be surprised at how people's perceptions of the event have changed in the decades since.
First off, let me say that the book is well worth reading. Morison was a man of the sea himself and he sailed in the same waters as Columbus. We see in the book how Columbus was a master seaman as well as being a great salesman, but on the other hand he was a poor geographer and even worse politician. The Portuguese were right in turning down his proposal for the Enterprise of the Indies, their geographers knew that Columbus was way off the mark regarding the distance from Europe to East Asia. In any event, they were making good progress down Africa and they felt it was just a matter of time until they found the bottom of the continent and the entrance to the Indian Ocean.

I would now like to address the change in fortune for Columbus's reputation.

(1) People now like to say that he didn't "discover" America. One reason is because there were already people (the American Indians) there, but that is simply world-games. Of course he "discovered" it, no one in Europe or Asia knew about it, and the Indians didn't know about Europe or Asia either. Secondly, the fact that Columbus wasn't necessarily the first to cross the Atlantic doesn't change anything. The Vikings who reached North America simply viewed it as another Arctic land and had no idea of the geographical relationship of this new continent to the rest of the world. In any event, they didn't exploit their discovery in the long run, only Columbus's voyage led to that. It is also speculated that Portuguese fisherman were crossing the Atlantic before Columbus, after all, they discovered the Azores already in the 1420's (already one-third of the way across the Atlantic) but we don't know if they sighted the continent, and even if they did, they, like the Vikings didn't do anything to exploit their knowledge.

(2) People say that he is responsible for the destruction of the Indian society that existed on Hispaniola. It certainly wasn't his original intention to do this. He wanted to convert the natives to Christianity, so killing them off wouldn't help this mission. Morison himself points out that Columbus did contribute to this tragedy, but even if Columbus had been more careful, I think the Indians would have had the same fate. The settlers that came in the wake of the discovery brought new plants and animals in addition to previously unknown diseases and all these things would have grievously damaged the Indians agricultural system and society. Add to this the Spaniard's missionary religion which no doubt was attractive to at least some of the native population and we see that things could just not remain the same.
(3) Some people claim the pre-Columbian New World was some sort of paradise that the Europeans ruined. This is also knows as the myth of the "noble savage". Unfortunatley it is just a myth because human nature is the same all over the world. Greed, cruelty, avarice and the such are not just European or Western traits. The Carib tribes who inhabited the Caribbean Sea (and gave it its name) were very warlike and fought other, more peaceful tribes. Similarly, the Mexica (also knows as the Aztec) the Hernan Cortes conquered in the wake of Columbus was hated by its Indian neighbors for supressing them and taking prisoners for the human sacrificial system. Thus, we should be more realistic in evaluating the pre-Columbian societies and remove the "politically correct" rose-colored glasses.

(3) While it is true that slaves from Africa were brought over to Hispaniola, it must be remembered that the European slave traders who brought them over to the New World did not land in West Africa and grab natives "off the streets". They bought them from local African chiefs who captured prisoners in their local wars and then sold them to the Europeans. Thus, regarding the cruelty of the slavery system, there is plenty of blame to go around and not just to the white men involved.

All-in-all, this is a very enjoyable book to read about a man, who perhaps more than any other single person, brought about the most massive revolution in human history.

Genetics of Original Sin: The Impact of Natural Selection on the Future of Humanity (An Editions Odile Jacob Book), by Edward O. Wilson, C

Increasingly absorbed in recent years by advances in our understanding of the origin of life, evolutionary history, and the advent of humankind, eminent biologist Christian de Duve of late has also pondered deeply the future of life on this planet.  He speaks to readers with or without a scientific background, offering new perspectives on the threat posed by humanity’s immense biological success and on the resources human beings have for altering their current destructive path.

Focusing on the process of natural selection, de Duve explores the inordinate and now dangerous rise of humankind.  His explanation for this self-defeating success lies in the process of natural selection, which favors traits that are immediately useful, regardless of later consequences. Thus, the human genome determines such properties as tribal and group cohesion and collaboration and often fierce and irrational competition with and hostility toward other groups’ attributes that were once useful but now often ruinously dysfunctional.

Christian de Duve suggests that these traits, imprinted into human nature by natural selection, may have been recognized by the writers of Genesis, thus inspiring the myth of original sin.  Is there redemption for genetic original sin? In a brilliant and original conclusion, the author argues that, unique in the living world, humankind is endowed with the ability to deliberately oppose natural selection. Human beings have the capacity to devise measures that, while contrary to local or personal interests, can bring forth a safer world.

From Publishers Weekly
Nobel-prize winning Belgian biologist de Duve (Singularities) ascribes "humanity's inability to come to grips with threats that extend beyond the immediate future" as the product of natural selection and akin to the myth of original sin. Introducing his thesis with a brief overview of evolution and the mechanisms of life, he looks at the unique conjunction of genetics and environmental conditions that favored the development and supremacy of the human species. Our unprecedented brain-power has given human beings the power to domesticate the planet, providing us with the food, fuel, and raw materials that supported massive population growth (now 6 billion and growing). Fortunately, as neurobiology shows, "our most decisive traits are epigenetic, the product of culture and education; our brains rewire as we mature and give us the ability to supersede the genetic imperative to reproduce at all cost. The necessary cultural shift, however, prioritizing protecting the environment over our own immediate desires, will require the simultaneous education of parents and children and thus, will be extremely difficult to accomplish. A provocative book by an elder statesman of science.

PARTLY SIGNIFICANT, PARTLY WEAK
By Yehezkel Dror
Written by an outstanding Noble Prize winning scientist this book deserves respect. The basic thesis that natural selection favored short time success and thus endangers the long-term future of humanity is well put in the metaphor of "original sin." Its scientific parts, providing a clear outline of evolution and selection and their biological bases, are recommended readings for all decision makers and serious citizen. But when moving outside the domains of bio-sciences, mapping dangers, and proposing "solutions" the book is less impressive.
Leaving aside problematic uses of the term "rational," doubtful understandings of the inner nature of "faiths," and some unwarranted as well as superfluous judgments on current affairs, the book suffers from two main weaknesses: Disregard of main dangers facing humanity; and lack of serious consideration of the agency needed for coping with them.
Green house effects, degradation of the ecology and resources scarcities, as mentioned in the book, are only some of the serious problems facing humanity. Not less portentous are problems posed by human enhancement, nano-technologies, intelligent robots, engineered viruses, possibly dangerous high energy experiments, and other knowledge and tools provided by science and technology which can, by design or inadvertently, cause serious damage to humanity and even bring about its termination. These dangers are recognized in an increasing body of literature - but ignored in this book.
To go one level deeper, the dangers stem from a growing hiatus between the rapidly increasing capabilities of humanity to impact on its futures supplied by science and technology on one hand, and the absence of proportional upgrading of human moral, cognitive, emotional and institutional capacities to assure use of the increasing future-shaping capabilities for the better on the other. Surely, this is not the fault of science and technology. Still, its role in enabling humanity to destroy itself, hand-in-hand with enabling unprecedented human thriving, must be frankly recognized. But this unintended consequence of science and technology with all that it implies is not mentioned in the book.
Coping with the opportunities and dangers posed to humanity by science and technology, as combined with constraining genetic endowments and cultural learning limitations, requires radical measures, including regulation of science and technology, limitations of national sovereignty and so on - leading to the critical question of agency.
The prescriptions suggested by the book are rather conventional and do not meet requirements. Concerning agency, the authors perceptively point out "if the world's leaders could become more actively involved in the fight for the survival of humanity....the dangers... can be deflected (p. 211). But how to bring about such involvement by world leaders -- is left open.
Thus, this book joins the vast literature pointing out dangers, exploring some of the required countermeasures while ignoring other urgently required ones, and leaving the critical issue of agency open or escaping into wishful thinking on the "wisdom of the multitudes," emerging global civic society and similar deus ex machina illusions.

Amazing, lightweight and explaining
By Amazon Customer
I find it quite strange that this book got only 2 reviews so far. The author did the same fabulous job to explain genetics as David Attenborough to explain the world of plants and animals, or Brian Cox to explain physics.
I had little time and hundreds of of urgent issues, despite that I couldn't wait until I can continue to read this book.
With my very patchy knowledge of chemistry and biology I was able to devour the book without looking in a dictionary on encyclopaedia very often.

Amazing book
By dd
Packed with deep knowledge and insight, the author (a Nobel Laureate), presents in plain easy to understand language how the principles of natural selection responsible for ascend of humanity so far could very well lead to its demise. Natural selection is the original sin. Human's are blessed with a superior brain to comprehend the flaws of natural selection. And to survive we must act against natural selection.

Small and very readable. The Table of Content interestingly summarizes the main ideas in each chapter. Just reading the Table of Content reveals the basic thesis of the author.

An interesting book that connects the biology of living beings to the fate of humanity.

Using the metaphor of railway or train lines, Myers explains how patterns of strain communicate through the myofascial ‘webbing’, contributing to postural compensation and movement stability. Written in a style that makes it easy to understand and apply, Anatomy Trains provides an accessible and comprehensive explanation of the anatomy and function of the myofascial system in the body. The DVD ROM in the back of the book contains video of techniques, Anatomy Trains-based dissections and computer animations of the myofascial meridian lines.

includes full-colour illustrations of 11 myofascial meridians and the rules for discovering other meridians
• uses numerous full colour charts and drawings to detail the muscular and fascial structures involved in the meridians
• presents information on assessment of structural and movement patterns and gives related application to manual therapy and movement education
• provides a selection of techniques from the library of structural integration
• includes an introduction to the fascial system as a whole, with points-of-view and the latest research findings on the fascial system’s responses
• offers a fun approach to learning essential structural anatomy, comparing the connective tissue system to a railway network

Review
"Anatomy Trains champions a wider scope of the body and it's movement systems." -- Gray Cook MSPT, OSPT, CSCS, Developer of the Functional Movement Screen

"The Anatomy Trains metaphor is a revelation; a way of seeing the body's interconnectedness more clearly, offering new physiological and anatomical perspectives, and therefore different clinical choices. Quite simply the content of this book is revolutionary." -- Leon Chaitow ND DO, Honorary Fellow, University of Westminster, Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies

“Clinicians, researchers and educators alike will find this an invaluable text, which leads to new insights on each reading.” -- Thomas Findley MD PhD, Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey; Editor-in Chief, International Journal of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Research, Education and Practice

"This book is an eclectic overview of many strands of information garnered from at least a dozen disparate sources. Its format is young, light, and easy on the eye, and is a book of the 21st Century - it may well be a template for future texts."

The Osteopath, October/November 2009

Applicable to Everyone
By R. Williams
Those of us in the physical therapy, personal and performance training, coaching, strength and conditioning, and other physical activity related fields know the importance of continuing education, and Anatomy Trains provides a refreshing look at how things actually work in comparison to half-of-the-story as provided by most text books.

Anatomy is taught in isolated motion. No one moves strictly in isolated motion in anything pertaining to every day life. This book provides the theory as well as dissection evidence to give credibility to the arguement that those of us in our field need to be more open minded to treatment outside the realm of strict anatomical interpretation. The problem there lies more in America's fixation with treating the problem, but not addressing the cause. Its not just the professional's fault for this, but the client's uneducation or miseducation.

When a client comes in to get a massage because they're back is tight, a massage therapist treats the back. It doesn't matter if the cause is actually a tight lower SFL causing anterior pelvic tilt then causing compensation in the SBL for the back pain; the back is still what the professional treats. Most of the time, it isn't the professional's fault for not knowing; it isn't taught in most schools.

Anatomy Trains is a great tool to show the benefits of progressive thought and prehab to prevent injuries in our clients and do a better job. Knowing how to fix is what we know, but knowing how to prevent is what we SHOULD know.

A RNs review from a patient/practioner's prospective
By Rocky Mountain gal
This is my second purchase of this book. I bought it to give to my physical therapist. I'm repeating my first review under my new account.

Wow! I thought I'd ordered the wrong book for my needs, which are 1.more knowledge of the process of myofascial release and 2. more understanding of places/points of anatomy. It has been a long while since I've been in school and a long time since I worked at a top teaching hospital in the Bay area in California.

I read a few paragraphs, taking care not to damage the book, because I thought I'd probably return it. HOWEVER, after a few sentences I was immediately caught up in the beauty and clarity of this work. NEVER has physiology been made so interesting. Finally, I understand so many things that were just a jumble of memorized facts in preparation for exams. This book has rekindled my love of physiology and is even undoing my dislike of anatomy. Anatomy didn't make sense to me - it was boring - it was memorization. Now I am understanding why my body is so damaged from the stresses I subject it to, but better, I understand how I can undo some damage and prevent more.

I worked on a Sports Medicine unit where famous athletes came for surgery. So much surgery can be avoided with corrective measures for chronic stressors. The medical community needs to be aware of this important material.

So bravo for such a readable work. What depth of historial findings, beautiful graphics, excellent grammar and text. I feel as though I'm in school again, but this time it is for pleasure and for pain relief.

After a few pages I tried to find out more about the author and was surprised not to see a Ph.D. by his name, although I'm not sure a Ph.D. makes one any wiser.

I totally concur with the first review.

Don't buy this book if you are looking for a simple, trendy approach to bodywork. This is so much more.

For Every Manual and Advanced Movement Practitioner
By Alejandro A. Reyes
I not only read this book, but I also did the 3-day training with Tom Myers himself. I actually experienced something down my superficial back line that weekend, which is the first line he discusses. It took a few days, but I've resolved it via some rolling and self-massage of the plantar fascia, calf and low back (all part of the SBL--Superficial Back Line), as well as getting myself a much-needed new and firm mattress on the Saturday of the course. It was interesting to have an experience of things being discussed. He's a great teacher with much experience and he conveys his work very well, just as he does in the book.

The book is very well-thought out, illustrated, organized, and written. The images are great and provide a real sense of what he's discussing. There are images of cadaver dissections, primal pictures images, rendering of the Anatomy Trains. The book is full color and the chapters are color coded making it a bit easier to get through.

The first chapter is rather dense at 60 pages, but the discussion of cellular biology really helps in giving some good background of this connective tissue matrix or extracellular matrix (ECM in Gray's Anatomy) that the Anatomy Trains is based upon. It's a good foundational chapter before getting into the myofascial meridians themselves.

Also covered in that first chapter is Buckminster Fuller's tensegrity (tension and compression) model. It is successfully mapped onto the human body and described in detail while juxtaposed to the classical Newtonian model of mechanical physics and the isolated muscle system we were all taught. I find the tensegrity model of the body to be nothing short of brilliant! The bones as compression structures pushing outward while the connective tissue and muscles making up the tension matrix pulling the bones in, thereby keeping them in place. It has muscular joint stability make so much more sense.

The anatomy trains are well-laid out and thoroughly explained. This system provides a good functional and global model of the musculoskeletal system, as opposed to the standard isolated muscle view. Recommendations for treatment and stretching techniques are well-discussed.

Although I state as a cautionary note that the average personal trainer will lack the anatomy background to delve into this work. I find it a bit more advanced and fitness pros should spend some time with some good functional anatomy resources before hitting this work. I haven't read Tom Myers' "Body 3: The Anatomist Reader", but it was stated in the course material as a good book to help with the anatomical references. Learning all of the functions of the separate muscles I think will help people to understand the Anatomy Trains better, because it can't be expected that this book will be a review of that. The classic "Muscles: Testing and Function with Posture and Pain" is a great work to delve into before attempting Anatomy Trains. Massage Therapists will most likely not have a problem with Anatomy Trains.

With that said, I also wished that the book and course had more fitness applications expressed so as to draw more fitness practitioners, instead of just yoga and pilates. I was the only personal trainer in the course out of 36 students and there is so much potential for this kind of work in the fitness industry. Gray Cook's review of the book should be evidence of that. Sue Hitzman, creator of the MELT Method, is doing some great work in the fitness industry with this model, but there should be much more done with it in general movement and function. There could be far greater application in the larger fitness industry which deals with movement in general. Physical Therapists can definitely benefit from this model as well. There were but 3 PTs in that course with me, including one from Provo, UT who flew to NYC to take the course.

The Fortune Hunter: A Novel, by Daisy Goodwin

The Fortune Hunter, the New York Times bestselling novel by Daisy Goodwin, is a lush, irresistible story of the public lives and private longings of grand historical figures.

Empress Elizabeth of Austria, known as Sisi, is the Princess Diana of nineteenth-century Europe. Famously beautiful, as captured in a portrait with diamond stars in her hair, she is unfulfilled in her marriage to the older Emperor Franz Joseph. Sisi has spent years evading the stifling formality of royal life on her private train or yacht or, whenever she can, on the back of a horse.

Captain Bay Middleton is dashing, young, and the finest horseman in England. He is also impoverished, with no hope of buying the horse needed to win the Grand National―until he meets Charlotte Baird. A clever, plainspoken heiress whose money gives her a choice among suitors, Charlotte falls in love with Bay, the first man to really notice her, for his vulnerability as well as his glamour. When Sisi joins the legendary hunt organized by Earl Spencer in England, Bay is asked to guide her on the treacherous course. Their shared passion for riding leads to an infatuation that jeopardizes the growing bond between Bay and Charlotte, and threatens all of their futures.

“One of the most compelling and entertaining historical novels I've ever read. . . .The Fortune Hunter will sweep you away.” ―Liz Smith, The Boston Herald

“Public Service Announcement. . . this gorgeous novel is the perfect storm of escapism, suspense, romance and superb historical research.” ―The Times, UK

“Finely drawn characters and intriguing plot lines. . . Readers who enjoyed The American Heiress will be first in line to savor Goodwin's new novel, [and] they will be followed quickly by others who appreciate engaging and thoughtful historical fiction.” ―Library Journal, starred review

“Goodwin manages to take the reader deep inside the characters' longings and flaws in a way that makes the reader root for them. An enchanting, beautifully written page-turner.” ―Publishers Weekly

“A luxurious indulgence. . . .Goodwin writes with effortless grace, and her dialogue's subtle wit is delightful. Each of her three protagonists commands attention and sympathy, which heightens the story's poignancy. Charlotte's levelheaded personality remains unaffected by her wealth or her relatives' dependence on it, and Bay is movingly torn between duty and his sense of self-worth. Finally, despite her outlandish regimen for maintaining her complexion and ankle-length chestnut tresses, Elizabeth is never less than beguiling.” ―Booklist

“With its witty dialogue, intriguing research and cameo appearances by Queen Victoria and other royals, Goodwin's latest is a pleasurable excursion into Downton-land complete with high-society weddings, lavish balls and an exciting, all-or-nothing horse-racing finale.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“A sumptuous, scrumptious confection, with country houses, Austrian Empresses and Victorian glamour galore.” ―Lucy Worsley, Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces

Well-Written, Well-Researched, But Violates Actual History A Lot
By Reader from Washington, DC
I was drawn in by this novel's premise -- the Victorian-era battle between the stunningly beautiful Empress Elizabeth of Austria and the nice-looking, but not stunning, heiress, Miss Charlotte Baird of England, for the affections of a handsome cavalry officer, famous horseman and notorious womanizer, Captain Bay Middleton.

The novel is clearly-written, carefully researched -- manners, social customs and language -- and has an intriguing plot that kept this reader engrossed. I award those elements in the book a "5."

But despite the author's careful research, so many major historical facts are altered -- clearly intentionally -- that my enjoyment of the book was substantially diminished. I would give it a "2" for historical accuracy in terms of its characters' lives, with an overall "3" score..

For example, the book packs the struggle between the two women into a less than one year, 1875-76 -- but Charlotte is said by some sources to have been engaged to Middleton for seven years between 1875 until 1882, during which time Middleton remained the Empress's horse master during the Empress's repeated visits for hunting to England and Ireland. There's quite a difference between 1 year engagement and a 7 year engagement!

The author also notes that very little is actually known about Charlotte Baird, so she has taken the liberty of giving her a passionate interest in photography. While photography was popular with some women and many men in that era, turning Charlotte into a proto-feminist with a career -- Charlotte was a shipping heiress -- seems a real stretch.

Finally, Bay Middleton is correctly shown as having an affair with a married woman, Lady Hozier, that produced a daughter, Clementine, who later became Winston Churchill's wife. But he's shown having the affair during 1875 -- shortly before he meets Charlotte and the Empress -- when the actual affair took place in 1884 -- nearly a decade later. Clementine was born in 1885. A letter has been found in which his mistress, Lady Hozier, acknowledges that Clementine was his child.

It looks to me like the author took the original -- and much more complicated and lengthy -- story, and attempted to write a shorter, happier, fantasy version of it.

I don't mind chronology being bent a little in a historical novel, and activities imagined for people that we know little about, or gaps in their histories being filled in with plausible activities, but the alterations in historical facts within this novel are major alterations in the lives of these people.

The author might have been better off writing a novel about the actual facts -- it would still have been a gripping story. Alternatively, she could have taken the characters, given them new names and somewhat similar identities, and then rearranged many of the historical facts without any problem.

"The camera never lies"
By E.M. Bristol
Charlotte Baird, the heroine of "The Fortune Hunter" is not a particular comely young woman, but her late mother's fortune, "made her attractive enough," as the author notes, especially to potential suitors like Bay Middleton whom she meets at a ball. A handsome man with a reputation with the ladies, (and talented steeplechaser) Middleton is currently having an affair with a rich woman, but finds himself developing feelings for Charlotte, and despite the gossip, perhaps not just because she's an heiress. For her part, Charlotte, a talented amateur photographer, is not content merely to marry and settle down, like her soon-to-be sister-in-law, Augusta, something the visiting American photographer, Caspar Hewes, seems to understand.

Soon a rival for Middleton will arise, in the form of the Empress of Austria, who has arrived to visit and whose invitation to become her "groom" during the hunts, Middleton cannot refuse. Elizabeth or "Sisi" as she's called finds her marriage unfulfilling and seeks diversion by traveling abroad. As she and Middleton participate in the hunts together, they find a mutual attraction developing, as well as much gossip. Though Middleton brings up the possibility of elopement with Charlotte early on, she refuses, setting into play a series of maneuvers and misunderstandings, that will take place over a season of hunts, parties, a memorable photography exhibit, and the Grand National race, in which truths will be revealed and partners found.

Set in the early nineteenth century, the novel does a good job bringing the British society world to life, including the thrill of fox hunting. The tension between the characters, which must never be directly addressed, is nicely done, too. Overall, "The Fortune Hunters" is an Austen-like story about pride, prejudice and finding love despite them.

A beautifully written novel which tells a magical story about real people from history. It's 1875 and Charlotte Baird, heir to the Lennox fortune, is a very unusual young woman for her time. Instead of being worried about parties and men, she is more interested in taking photographs, much to the annoyance of her family which includes her brother, Fred, and her Aunt Adelaide, as her parents are both dead. She is still too young to come into her inheritance but it does not stop the young men from pursuing her. She has eyes only for Bay Middleton, a handsome and dashing cavalry officer with no money. Unfortunately for Charlotte, the Empress of Austria, Sisi, is also in England and very interested in Bay as well. As Sisi is supposed to be one of the most beautiful women in Europe, it would seem Charlotte does not stand a chance. But Sisi is also married to Emperor Franz Joseph, but unhappily so. So who will Bay choose?

Goodwin not only describes the three main characters in depth but gives us a view of Queen Victoria and her entourage. In fact, at times her descriptions of Queen Victoria is quite humorous. Further, the author gives the reader details of architecture and landscape which are beyond compare. All the characters are well developed and you cannot help liking them all except I found myself rooting for Charlotte to win Bay's affections. Goodwin also shows the strong bond between Captain Middleton and his horse, Tipsy. In fact, Tipsy seems to be Bay's true love.

This is a lovely novel with engaging characters, a great story, and is beautifully written. What more could one want in a book? I highly recommend it!

I have a Pepsi collection and most of my things were not in this book. Things that I see in the antique stores are not usually the rarest of the collectibles, so would rather have something more useful.

Markets and the Environment, Second Edition (Foundations of Contemporary Environmental Studies Series), by Mr. Nathaniel O. Keohane, Dr. S

A clear grasp of economics is essential to understanding why environmental problems arise and how we can address them. So it is with good reason that Markets and the Environment has become a classic text in environmental studies since its first publication in 2007. Now thoroughly revised with updated information on current environmental policy and real-world examples of market-based instruments, the primer is more relevant than ever.

The authors provide a concise yet thorough introduction to the economic theory of environmental policy and natural resource management. They begin with an overview of environmental economics before exploring topics including cost-benefit analysis, market failures and successes, and economic growth and sustainability. Readers of the first edition will notice new analysis of cost estimation as well as specific market instruments, including municipal water pricing and waste disposal. Particular attention is paid to behavioral economics and cap-and-trade programs for carbon.

Throughout, Markets and the Environment is written in an accessible, student-friendly style. It includes study questions for each chapter, as well as clear figures and relatable text boxes. The authors have long understood the need for a book to bridge the gap between short articles on environmental economics and tomes filled with complex algebra. Markets and the Environment makes clear how economics influences policy, the world around us, and our own lives.
