A good hand book

I bought this and a couple of other books while looking for alternative methods to deal with calculations for a submerged broad crested weir. This book offered not only a method for analyzing it, but a great reference on weirs in general, and that is just one chapter of many.

Whereas most texts cover weirs in, at most, a few pages, this book devotes a quite useful chapter. Note that you must read the whole chapter to get the definitions of the variables, which are scattered throughout, but are consistent throughout. It also requires some informed thought to sort through to what is most significant to the task at hand. I am not sure how it would work as a text book as I flipped immediately to the chapter I wanted, but it definitely works as a hand book.

There are some USBR manuals that can be downloaded which are also useful, but this book provides a good background and roundup of information from around the world. It looks like one of those essential additions to my hydraulics library.

Excellent hydraulic engineering reference

This book is all about the hydraulic engineering of open channel flows. It covers basic hydraulics, as well as unsteady flow situations.
The text starts with a review of the basic principles of fluid mechanics, then continue with the flow resistance calculations. The 5th chapter marks the start of the high-expertise engineering material covered in the next 9 chapters. Each section is well-documented and it becomes obvious that the author, Dr Sergio Montes, is himself a world expert in hydraulic engineering.
Except for one chapter (Chap. 12) on air entrainment that I found outdated, I enjoyed genuinely the book and I have already made good use of several parts. In my opinion, this book is the perfect reference for postgraduate students and hydraulic engineers working actively in the field.

The book you didn't know you need

Impressive book on Open Channel Flows. Contains the classical outlook and some "new" and fresh approaches (let's make it clear that it is dated from 1998 anyway). I bought it following references of Dr. Castro-Orgaz in his papers and public suggestion of Prof. Chanson on Amazon and it has been a very positive surprise.

Major drawback? The price. Mine is second-hand.. But after checking, I would consider even a new acquisition.

About the Author
Dr. David Norris has done research in environmental endocrinology and neuroendocrinology for more than 50 years. Dr. Norris is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado. He received his bachelor’s degree from Baldwin-Wallace College and his Ph.D. in 1966 from the University of Washington. Dr. Norris has worked in the area of forensic botany with Dr. Jane H. Bock, since 1982, primarily on developing the use of plant cells in the gastrointestinal tract to aid in homicide investigations. Dr. Norris and Dr. Bock have been involved in investigations in numerous states as well as throughout the State of Colorado. Dr. Norris has been certified as an expert witness in this area for the State of Colorado. With Dr. Bock, Dr. Norris also has consulted on other botanical evidence for criminal investigations. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences in 2014.

Dr. James A. Carr is a Professor of Biology in the Department of Biological Sciences at Texas Tech University. His research has focused on various aspects of environmental endocrinology and neuroendocrinology for 25 years including the effects of opioid peptides on brainstem, cardiovascular areas and pituitary hormone secretion, the impact of environmental pollutants on the thyroid and reproductive axes in fishes and amphibians, and the impact of stress hormones on subcortical visual pathways involved in feeding.

The 4th is better

If you are taking a class that requires this book, but says to get the fifth edition, don't get the fifth edition. The fourth edition has the same images and same information that was just moved around and the price is unbeatable. I will say that the company, Sharp Books, was great for their pricing and reasonable people to deal with, plus the shipping was rather fast. Though this book was not what I wanted, I would shop from them again

syrup making book for kids

This book tells the basic story behind making maple syrup, but has some artwork that is not at all like the process we personally use to make syrup. They show animals drinking sap from the buckets while that hang on the trees. I don't know who allows this to happen, maybe some do, but not in my sugarbush! Otherwise it is fun and informative.

The Brockwells, a large extended family, enjoy producing maple syrup together. Every member of the family, including the little cousins and the grandparents, has a job to do in the various stages of production. First they tap the maple trees and hang buckets to collect the sap, and when the buckets have filled, they pour the sap into a giant barrel to take to the sugarhouse. From a storage tank in the sugarhouse, the sap runs into evaporating pans and is heated to a boil. Once the correct temperature is reached and enough water has boiled off, the syrup is ready to be filtered, poured into jars, and graded according to sweetness and color.

This excellent book is sure to please with its informative text and delightful art work. The clear descriptions, detailed illustrations, and author's note in the back all work well together to make Maple Syrup Season a useful resource for teachers seeking to spice up a lesson about natural resources. Armed with new knowledge about the difference between Fancy Grade and Grade A-Dark Amber, the reader may see a whole new side to things while walking through the maple syrup section of the local grocery store.

Favorite Picture Book on Maple Syrup for Young Children

I just read through a number of picture books on making maple syrup with my children (ages 2-9). This was my favorite. The illustrations were delightful enough to keep the attention of even my 2 year old, and the text provided enough information so that all my children could learn about the process. We also enjoyed Sugaring, Sugarbush Spring, & Sugar Snow (My First Little House).

False advertising

Let's be clear: this book will not get you in the zip code of passing any of the three exams needed for the MCSA: SQL Server 2012 certification. If you are considering MCSA, pass without a second thought.

If not ... the title still does not fit, as a book about SQL Server administration should not have this much non-administration-related, occasionally basic, content. What this book is, then, is a SQL Server book with a focus on administrator tasks, plus a helping of SSIS. In my opinion, in this capacity it's actually not bad and could be a decent beginner's choice.

Not for Exams

I had passed 70-461 and 70-462 when I bought this book because my teacher used this book to teach SQL 2012 at a community college. This book offers very little practice and lot of of mistakes in the exercises. I tried to submit errata on sybex.com but it doesn't have a feature to view/submit errata like I can do with books at oreilly.com. If you already work daily with SQL and want to read more , this is a book for you. If you want to pass exams with this book, I am afraid you will be dissappointed.

Framework for the Cert and great beginner DBA book

First and foremost I was rusty on DBA work and needed something to get me back into the game slowly but surely. Truthfully, I haven't taken the certification tests. At this point it is highly unlikely that I will do that. On the other side this book is GREAT for a beginner DBA. It really starts from Point A and takes you to about Point F. Yes, T-SQL and a whole lot of other elements such as best practices, security, etc,... are lacking. If you have to learn ALL of that then you should be looking at multiple books/sources anyway.

If you have any passion for DBA work and want to be reasonably good at it and be in the right path towards your certification then I highly recommend this book. The fundamentals presented actually apply to other DB's I have and currently use as well (i.e. Oracle, MySQL, etc,.).

I do recommend this to anyone who believes that need to learn from the beginning. If you are already moderately skilled and just want the cert guide then I would consider other options only because this is not a pure certification guide.

I have no regrets. It is exactly as presented. A beginner guide to MS SQL and a mild guide to the certificaiton.

Twenty years is a long time to foster a grudge

Two decades ago, Victoria Rutherford stood by while her father reamed out Adam Benson, the son of his ranch hand, for making out with his daughter in the Rutherford's barn. While accusing Benson of all but being a rapist, Victoria was unable to destroy her father's belief that she was perfect. Because of that, the Bensons were evicted from the Rutherford ranch and from there his father resumed drinking and Adam and his mother struggled to make ends meet. Now, the tables have turned and to save her father's ranch, Victoria must marry Adam and work as his ranch hand and maid in order to better understand the position he was in twenty years ago at the mercy of her and her father. Victoria finds herself regressing into the fascination she had for him when she was fifteen years old and all too soon realizes that the love she feels for him is a "grown-up" one.
Though Victoria Pade's writing is adequate, I was rather disappointed with the execution of this story for two reasons. My first problem was with the time span. The brevity of it made the resolution rather unbelievable. My second problem was with the superficiality of both the hero and the heroine. Adam has had twenty years to build Victoria into a "witch" and to nurture his resentment but Victoria's beauty has him rethinking his intentions. Victoria is enchanted by how handsome he looks that she can't help but be attracted to him despite the fact that he hates her. The utter lack of conviction on the parts of both characters made it hard to like either one. For a story that is based on a twenty-year old resentment, I expected there to be a great deal more development instead of a large amount of chemistry. Pade's installment of this series takes it a step down and that's unfortunate.

Teenage lust turns to a disaster for Adams family. Victoria and successful Adam meet again under a revenge scheme which included a marriage to each other. After the revenge scheme turned out differently than planned a love developed. This book was another great read in Montana Maverick series.

Lots of cool robots - lots of great rhymes
lots of great reading, all of the time.

Captured the essence of the robot within (my daughter).
My daughter loves it - she loves all robots and these are just what the doctor, I mean, *robot* ordered.

Easy for my daughter to read and get excited. Brilliant to see an author who is in touch with the wonder of childhood and bring it to life for us all to enjoy.

My first grader loved this book! A lot of the words were very easy for him to read and it was very engaging for him since he does like robots!

My daughrter liked it

I put this on my kindle keyboard and read it too her, she was intrugued by it considering she is a 1 year old and it was in black and white. I put it on my Ipad and and the color really helped her enjoy it more.
