A rare book

Vernon Lee Fluharty is a brilliant graybeard. To this end, his 1957 publication of, "Dance of the Millions: Military Rule and the Social Revolution in Colombia 1930-1956," is by far the best academic study of the brutal era coined "La Violencia" that I have found to date. It is a pity that contemporary Latin American scholars do not give Fluharty the full recognition that he deserves.
The author spends many years in Colombia and makes significant observations. For instance, he carefully argues that the true villain of violence in Colombia is not the poor masses demanding social and land reforms but an oligarchy who conducts a wicked "counter-revolution" to make sure that the feudalistic system of privilege throughout the nation remains unchanged. Fluharty breaks new ground with his painstakingly documented thesis that the original intellectual authors of terrorism in Colombia were the rich. Ultimately, this book thoroughly documents a period of complete social failure on behalf of Colombia's political leaders from 1946 to 1956.
Fluharty's well-written narrative explains that until the blood bath of 1948 Colombia had enjoyed almost forty years of relative peace and progress. Government was under civilians. The constitution was honored, the press was free, and public opinion was unshackled. And then, "as though at the wave of some malign wand, frightful violence swept the country. Civil liberties died, opposition parties were silenced, jails bulged with political prisoners...and terror-stricken refugees swarmed to the cities," he writes.
The author agrees with other main-stream historians that "La Violencia" was triggered by the mysterious April 9, 1948 murder of the beloved populist Jorge Eliecer Gaitan. However what makes Fluharty special is his honest conclusion that the bloodshed did not start in earnest until "a united front of oligarchs from both the Liberal and Conservative parties...temporarily discarding partisan differences, joined forces across party lines to halt land reform, labor unionism, agitation for higher wages, and other campaigns aimed at raising the general standard of living of the masses." Eventually, after hundreds of thousands were butchered, the Army stepped in on June 13, 1953 to stop the civil war.
Fluharty courageously exposes the strong Nazi overtones and Pro-Franco fanaticism of Laureano Gomez and the destructive, selfish motives of the Colombian Conservative Party. This is a rare book that shows how the rich in Colombia collectively turned back the clock on progressive government and replaced it with a mean-spirited and murderous police state. This University of Pittsburgh Press publication is a "must read" for all serious students of Colombian - American affairs.

As an architect (who hasn't been to Venice enough), I have enjoyed dipping in to the first edition for years. As a photographer I recognise the quality of the images by A F Kersting in that edition. Without exception they are technically impeccable, well composed, and had a real sparkle and brilliance. Printed on better quality paper, in duotone, I would happily pay 2 or 3 times the cost of the book. By comparison the image of Sarah Quill were rather dull and lacking - surely she had a wide langle lens I thought - worse was the converging verticals, that really had no place in an architecture book. It is easy to avoid them when taking a photograph, why didn't she?
It is regrettable in this edition that Kersting's fine b+w images have been jettisoned for far more SQ images. That these images still perpetuate converging and diverging verticles is sloppy. That they haven't been corrected at pre-production is astonishing. Not `splendid' photographs, merely workaday

A Thorough and Facinating History of this Unique City

Deborah Howard's account of this unique city, it's origin and development over the years is is a fascinating document. Together with the excellent photogaphs in full colour by Sarah Quill and Deborah Howard this book is inavaluable to anyone who has visited Venice. This book may be classed as a history book to compliment a persons interests in what may be missing from regular guide books. It is not a boring book about constructural practices per say but more about the ingenious ways in which the early settlers escaped from tyranical oppression and created their primitive home in a lagoon that has become the most beautiful collection of architecture anywhere today. Having visited Venice several times I wanted to find out more about this great place. To say that necessity is the mother of invention is living proof which led to the construction of the city of Venice. If you love Venice you will love this book. David Dickinson Alberts, Canada

Essential for Dylan fans

Dylanophiles have long tired of (..) literary critics saying that Dylan is "not really a poet; this book does something to put the lie to the accusation. It IS poetry, though not in the "conventional" sense. The majority of the book is written in a style of prose poem/poem/prose poem (repeating the cycle for however long the poem is), and then closing the piece with a written letter signed by some character from Dylan's imagination. As you may have surmised, the prose poems are of the type that Dylan wrote for the linear notes to Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited. And yes, the poems are in the style of the poems that Dylan wrote for The Times They Are A-Changin' and Another Side. Precious little of it is literal; it is almost wholly written in the rambling, seeming stream-of-consciousness style that Dylan introduced in the aforementioned prose poems. He was highly into writing allegerical fables at that time, and this book abounds in them. Dylan fans will certainly enjoy this book a lot. It gives a peak into his creativity and writing process like nothing else really does. This is Dylan unpolished, not buried beneath the stream of re-writes that produced such masterpieces as "Visions of Johanna." There are references to many of his songs and lyrics within the poetry - whether this came from those, or vice versa, is anyone's guess, but it's a fascinating glimpse into Dylan in any case. You can get something out of these poems. They are fun to read, and have a quick, rolling meter and cadence that all of Dylan's poetic works seem to have, and this makes for interesting and thought-provoking seat-of-the-pants reading. Dylan fans will revel in it. Probably, those who are not already taken with the author will not be converted by this book. This book is actually a less-than-stellar book in the eyes of many (admittedly, by Dylan himself, who held off publishing it for 5 years), and, though interesting and thought-provoking, it is a very ornate and abstract work, without also offering the insights into life that his lyrics have always offered. So the merits of this book for those who are not already Dylan fans is questionable. On the other hand, it is certainly essential for Dylanophiles, and it certainly is a further contribution from Dylan to the field of poetry, and a more legitimate one in the eyes of many. Here's hoping that it helps Bob win the Nobel Prize for Literature that he so geniunely and truly deserves. It is not a cultural opinion, but indeed a fact, that Dylan did more for poetry than anyone else in the 20th century - at least in the sense of bringing it to the masses. And he certainly re-defined popular music as we know it. This book is a further gem in his canon, and helps show a small part of the reason for why Dylan means so much to so many different people.

Michael Gramling: Michael Gramling is an expert in providing family literacy training and positive guidance training and has conducted experiential supervisor/mentor coach institutes for Head Start programs throughout the US. Michael also teaches a community parenting class for distressed families who are involved in custody disputes or have been ordered by the court system to seek training and support for their parenting skills. Michael earned his master's degree in human development from Pacific Oaks College.

Elizabeth Jones: Elizabeth Jones is faculty emerita, School of Human Development and Family Studies, Pacific Oaks College, in Pasadena, California.

Fun to read

Excellent book. It's an easy read and thought provoking examples of current preschools and what "objectives" should look like instead. I think the examples are very heavily weighted toward "head start" or similarly funded programs. It is not at all applicable to what Montessori programs look like.

Excellent book, very true...wish I could have a classroom like this! Hard to teach a balance to college students between standards (politics) and developmentally appropriate. We need more professionals who understand good teaching in Appalachia, this book really lays it out for you. more supervisors and legislatures need to read this book.

Excellent dissection of early childhood education and how to fix it

The best part of this book is the latter half where the author describes a classroom wherein the faults of our current ECE system are fixed. I've read a lot of books on this subject but few of them offer up so complete a solution. There is a lot to unpack in the description of the more ideal pre-k setting, and a lot of it can even be used by parents at home. This is a book that should be read by educators, caregivers and parents.

Best Course

I urge everyone to please, please ignore the one-star review below. That reviewer knows nothing of the book and has rated it purely based on the shallowest levels of its external presentation. I studied Japanese with this book for several years and, since I also did study with other textbooks, I can say with absolute certainty that this is the best one I have used and probably one of the very best out there. Tawa-sensei is the only one who really understands and communicates the language's grammatical structures at a satisfyingly deep level, and her book is similarly thorough and effective. If the previous reviewer and others balk at the price, they should know that it is actually still cheaper than many textbooks of much lesser volume and value, and is well worth every cent if learning Japanese is something important to you. Ask anyone else who studied with Tawa-sensei and they will tell you the same as I have.
