The Truth Is Written "In The Stone"

Being of Ethiopian "Falasha" descent, and learning through research of our ancient heritage and culture has led me to so many different burdening truths but at the same time much positive wonder as well. It is my layman opinion that the author gave his best effort in dissecting Falasha's modern history but there is still a strong influence of european agenda based on the millennial racial advantages of our caucasian brethren of east and western origin. Clearly institutionalized programmed influences of european ego for the concept of being the "center of civilization" is at play here. I don't believe it was with intent, it's just the way we've all been educated and subliminally directed to only see white with a narrow view especially concerning Judaism and its additional book of hebraic ecclesial law extensions, the "Talmud". I also found the book "The Hyena People", author Hagar Salamon's expression's to be very similar. They call us jews on paper in an attempt to link us but in reality we are very few and don't exist in their modern Jewish world. Ms Salamon's book was somewhat more patronizing and exploitive but very informative at the same time. I give thanks and honor to the few righteous Ashkenazi and Sephardic brethren, past and present, whom dedicated their life to a hands-on research of our people and their sincere efforts to record and inform of our history and plight, though from a european perspective.

Why is it such a mystery to scholars of european diaspora as to how and when we got to be what we are? It is very obvious to me based on the misinformation put out by all the so called authorities of the judaic faiths, that if you clear your mental programming and really look at the physical environment of Africa with an unbiased approach in logical chronologic history with relation to archaeology and evolutionary root keys of certain passages and scripture that branch throughout the Torah, Bible, and Qur'an, also with access to a good dictionary, one would begin to observe who the real converts are. There is no mention for a race of people within the first five books of the Torah. Why? Because during that period there was obviously only one race. Darwin's theory of evolution reluctantly opened European minds to this fact on a more scientific note and alternately had to be a real problem for the Papal Order as with all ancient archaeological findings and new scientific discoveries. Environment is the key to what race the people were and that particular environment is not conducive for long term survival of a so called pure caucasian people because of their lack of melanin which is needed for long term survival in such extremely heated conditions. Once you can see it and accept it, everything that is presumed to be a mystery about us and yourselves fall into place. Not just learning about the Falasha but the origin of mankind and future endeavors to be foretold based on present analogies of the simple natural chaotic order of humanity, and in our individual ability to seek clearer knowledge and understanding in how we all are connected like an electrical current guided by the astral cycles of the universe. Maybe then, with respect, one will be able to discover even more wonder in the deeply rich heritage of all people, their gifts, unique abilities, and how we are all linked.

Some may feel this credible alternate perception is very much a threat to individuals who feel that they have some kind of special privilege in the world claiming to be something they're not, which has been more than likely passed down orally by family and community who never practiced or studied hebrew or any other religion and filtered by clerics through text that has been manipulated, misinterpreted, plagiarized, altered, and intentionally cultured by the agenda of the political elite and exaggerated with eurocentric art and images throughout the Mediterranean and european community to further exercise their tailored history for continued influence of power and social control. This purposeful artful deception has been in practice for over a thousand years up until today with the further assistance of Hollywood films and a biased media machine. This machine leave many jews and hebrews themselves to ponder this question "are we a race by blood, religious faith, or both?" These are some of the many deceptions that poke holes and make contradictory doctrine of all the abrahamic faiths, further diluting their true purpose and relegate its messages to a somewhat fairy-tale like comprehension which requires unquestionable faith to fill in the gaps. These guides should be approached with an open mind and ingested with common intellectual logic of practical details in study to which doesn't confine questions that stifle learning and good common sense.

In Ethiopia we where not called "Jews" we were called Hebrews. Jew is a european terminology. So I do not proclaim to be as such. Even the term Beta (Bet) Israel is somewhat ambiguous. Isn't Alpha before Beta? To coin the term Beta before Israel in description of us sublimes the notion we came by conversion from one of the twelve european tribes who I guess assume they all should be the Alpha. I prefer the term Falasha, it is of my heritage, not my religion. Our form of Hebrew worship is the most ancient. The original followers of the hebrew religion, converts, and their slaves began in Ethiopia. Even though the concept our religious faith rubber-banded back and forth it still succeeded in spreading south, east, and north. Leaving seeds in South Africa, West Africa, the Sahara, the Mediterranean, Persia, and as far east as China. Sometimes surviving within small pockets amidst other faiths and beliefs. In an era when the key to last hope survival was to diversify, assimilate, or wander. From those points on they thinned and became further separated by war, environment, economic sustainability, and yes, separated as well by a majority/minority based on racial status, class, certain physical features, and the rituals practiced within their faith. A faith sporadically perverted over time and scattered throughout with wandering groups of diaspora and their converted populations, and for sure there was interracial breeding. Considering the severity of certain threatening situations, such as local none acceptance of our ancestral faith, which relegates the strict balance of influence and economic sustenance of our people in all matters, as they wandered, one could surely assume a natural cyclic propagation of master becoming slave and slave becoming master, as witnessed throughout ancient and modern history.

To the reviewer, who has the audacity to call himself "a great guy", with such harsh words for Falashas: It is the collective attitude of people like yourself that instigate the negative factors of race in your fantasized idea of being superior. Basking in the greed of your ill perceived social advantage in systems of institutionalized bias and pre-programmed hate. As a Falasha, I have no desire to relocate to Israel. Being of African descent and living the experience of the racist American Anglo-Protestant south of the 50s and 60s, I would be a fool to believe that any person, country, or creed of European culture or colonies, would except me for being a Jew. Why should they, because I'm not. Even though I have documented proof of my hebrew lineage, it only matters to me. Some of these same "Jim Crow" mentalities, like yourself, were easily accepted as jew without questions and are certain to be living and stirring malicious commotions in Israel today. So I choose not to keep the company of thieves.

So, Mr "a great guy", don't worry, there are not many of us around. We are not special to no one but our friends and family just like any other people. We respect the heritage of our ancestors though some of their methods and rituals seem antiquated due partly to being isolated in the mountains from the plains of middle Africa for such a long period of time. Falashas mean no harm to no one and there are not enough of us left to be a threat. We may not all agree on certain issues but one thing for sure is that we share strong spiritual energy that link our hearts no matter where we are or where we go. Some Falashas, such as myself, do not want to live in Israel or claim to be "Jew". Israel will never know peace and security in my or my grandchildren's lifetime. It's certainly not a land flourishing with a booming economy. The only opportunities for Falashas in Israel are as a soldier, servant, entertainer, and some sports. Falashas have to agree to be re-programmed to the rituals and dogma of the Orthodox Talmud. In addition, based on an understanding of the current political conditions my long term analysis forecast war, war, and rumors of war. Speak with some of our brothers now living in Dimona, and with some of those who have returned to Ethiopia to hear of their experiences of poor living conditions and systemic isolation from their european brethren. In addition, personally, I do not want land or anything else that does not belong to me, especially based on having to agree and accept such a contradictory and fabled authority of lineage that was one of the catalyst utilized to justify its bloody claim.

The majority of the people who migrated and currently occupy Israel since the 1948 UN mandate are descendants of Western European ancestral colonizers of the Americas, European WWII refugees and their descendants, and later Eastern European political asylum seekers of the former Warsaw Pact community. Some were even welcomed from as far as the apartheid regime of South Africa (Dutch Afrikaners) to exercise their "right to return" and excluded The Lemba Tribe. As documented, the hierarchy of the Ashkenazi/Sephardic Knesset knew we Falashas existed well before 1948 but never invited us to exercise that right. Racism? It's a fair assessment. Maybe Falashas are living proof to the continued archaeological research and evidential findings that gives further prominence in illuminating greater attention to probability of the European (Jew) conversion, which is somewhat of a factual headache for those whom feel authority to say who is a jew and who's not.

Mr "a great guy" please read the book. If you had, maybe you would not have made such a blatantly racist outcry. As with many others of your opinion , it appears to be a personal inability to separate truth from fiction based on illusional foundations of reality and becoming intellectually stifled to comprehend anything deeper than what you see on your TV screen, and those very entertaining whitewashed big production holy glory films of Cecil B. DeMille.

I am a Falasha. I didn't purchase this book to learn where we came from. I purchased this book to get a better understanding and idea of where we're going.

Wow

After reading about the Khazars and thinking very little information existed about them and their past, I am amazed at how little is known about 'Ethiopian' Judaism. Mr. Kessler, one of the best sources on the subject, describes to the best of current information the history of the Beta Israel, definitely taking the view that these people are anciently related to Judaism.
His views are controversial -- many have claimed that the source of the Beta Israel was from the Arabian Peninsula, or a break-off from Ethiopian Christianity, although I find the latter hard to believe. I am currently reading other works about them written by Steven Kaplan and other.
Very little is known about the Beta Israel, hopefully much more research will be devoted to understanding them, their past, their history, their customs and their beliefs. I firmly believe that these people are Jews descended, as they believe, from Solomon. Luckily these people are still alive while other groups have unfortunately been relegated to history.
I highly recommend this work and I'm pretty sure most will enjoy it! Thank you David Kessler for all your study and devotion to this topic and to the Beta Israel.

A very good out-of-date book, needing a rewrite

The book is fascinating and a generally reliable account of the history, (of which I had some knowledge, as an historian and a visitor to Ethiopia). But it is not just out-of-date, it desperately needs a rewrite.

1. The various prefaces, (31 pages of them), are irritating, and need to be incorporated in the body where important, and relegated to chapter footnotes where they are not.
2. The first 106 pages are really an attempt to make sense of Ethiopian history, and only secondly to trace Falasha history. This is necessary, but would have benefitted from a map of its own, and a time-chart for the general reader. (Very necessary)
3. The remaining 60 pages are the important account, and very commendable. But they finish in 1982, when the situation of more than 90% of the Falashas bore no resemblance to the picture today. For this reason the Postscript and the Afterword are far too brief, and still do not reflect the current state of affairs, where all of the Jewish Falashas, and most of the credible claimants to a Jewish heritage, have settled in Israel.

Although their story is ongoing, this is a moment when we are likely to see a very different saga, with far less transformation. This is the time when a reliable history could be written. There is an obvious analogy with the story of the Jews of eastern Europe or of the Moslem world. One can write a very good history of the Jews of Iraq up to 1967, but not without recording in summary what has happened to the overwhelming majority of the remnant of survivors, now living elsewhere.

value of the worker within the marketplace

first, some words on the composition of the paperback volume. a gorgeous book, thick glossy pages, what you would expect to find in an art book or a book of photographs. as an extended text by a scholar, readers will be aware of the glare from lighting on the pages and the care required to work with thick pages.. pound wise, this is a heavy book, weighty as books twice its size.

studies of pornography usually begin with images and representations of women, often grounded in european art forms. mireille miller- young instead chooses to open her study of black women in pornography with the black female body received for the visual and tactile scrutiny, under the gazing eye and probing hand of the slave master. for miller-young this was the first pornographic use of the body of the black woman. the black woman enslaved and used as `sexualized labor' is followed, historically, by the freed black woman who chooses to become an agent within photographic and cinematic pornography. once the black woman has entered the porn industry, the inquiry extends to address her reasons. the black woman in porn was silent until the 1980s, there are no documents of their identities or what happened to them after leaving porn.

the actresses working in porn, beginning with the 1980s, are the women miller-young interviewed, a few of them made careers in porn. their reasons given for entering the porn industry fall under three categories, money, exploration of one's sexual self, and fame. the actresses talked of what they want from the industry and the racist barriers facing them, citing lack of respect for black women as vested workers within the porn industry.

as a side note, the nature of respect is a continuing troubling paradox within the text, clearly stated when the author overhears at an adult video convention denigrating remarks about black erotic dancers spoken by a producer of extreme porn, who only hires white women for his films, films in which women have their heads shoved in toilets and are made to vomit. this is the industry in which actresses are subject to patently sexist remarks. however, discrimination becomes an issue when the remarks become racist. roles in which black actresses portray maids are found equally offensive and stereotypical as roles portraying ghetto whores, while black actresses believe they should not be excluded from race neutral roles such as having their heads showed in toilets if those are the roles they want to perform.

if you're asking wherein lies respect of anyone, actress or producer, white or black, within such an industry, you have to accept miller-young's distinction between `respectability' associated with women not engaged in sex work and other forms of offensive unladylike behavior and `respect' expected within the workplace as a valued worker and economic parity for work done without being penalized by race.

unfortunately, without discussing respect fuller as applicable to content and acts performed, or the meaning and importance of self-respect, or the contexts of respect, miller-young, though as she may have rightfully believed, such a discussion would have expounded on a topic too lengthy for her book, does not render her paradox any less troubling by her explanation.

`When adult films like South Central Hookers and Ghetto Hoes exploit fantasies of black women, they capitalize on historical ideas about dependent black women trading on their sexualities--sexualities that black women do not deserve or have the right to mobilize for their own pleasure and liberation. The symbolic and material impoverishment of black women's value in the sexual marketplace informs these fantasies.

In turn, this impoverished valuation of black sexuality creates the rationale for sexual economic exploitation, thus sustaining a hierarchal system of embodied worth.'

the author's inquiry is less provocative when addressing the gaze. the gaze of the spectator shifts from the male producer and consumer of porn to the black female performer who gazes outside the confines of role, as we first see her in porn clips from the 1930s, the silent performer with a saucy mischievous gaze directed beyond the camera seemingly at the male spectator, and again the 1977 when in the film, SEX WORLD, when desiree west's gaze comes near the end of the film, a look delivered by a black woman who controlled her every situational moment on screen. in recent years, the gaze of the black woman in porn is shown as moving from in front of the camera to behind the camera, as black women become directors.

miller-young uses a phrase which could describe her own method of inquiry, `discursive binary'. what topics she puts forth as her unfolding thesis are paralleled and sometimes only shadowed by perspectives from some other studies and sources. her chapter on the alliances of ghetto porn with rap videos, i recalled recent rapper and video director, 3d na'tee (nee samantha davon james) comments on some of the responses of viewers to her video WHO CAN WE RUN TO? as she wondered why her message on racism delivered in the slurred rapid paced invective filled vocal trope of the rap culture, is lost on her viewers of the video who choose to focus on her nude body as inhabiting erotic space instead of a symbol of vulnerability situated in imagery of racial violence.

mireille miller-young's inquiry shows black women in the porn acting with `erotic sovereignty and agency' using `tactics of illicit eroticism' to negotiate changes in their profession. finally, her inquiry appeals to black feminist activists to consider the porn site as a workplace wherein black women are entitled the rights and respect due all workers, whatever their workplace.

The first chapter describes what a credit score is and how a scorecard is built which gives credit scores and models how the score is used in the lending decision. The second chapter describes the different ways the quality of a scorecard can be measured and points out how some of these measure the discrimination of the score, some the probability prediction of the score, and some the categorical predictions that are made using the score.

The remaining three chapters address how to use risk and response scoring to model the new problems in consumer lending. Chapter three looks at models that assist in deciding how to vary the loan terms made to different potential borrowers depending on their individual characteristics. Risk based pricing is the most common approach being introduced. Chapter four describes how one can use Markov chains and survival analysis to model the dynamics of a borrower's repayment and ordering behavior. These models allow one to make decisions that maximize the profitability of the borrower to the lender and can be considered as part of a customer relationship management strategy. The last chapter looks at how the new banking regulations in the Basel Accord apply to consumer lending. It develops models that show how they will change the operating decisions used in consumer lending and how their need for stress testing requires the development of new models to assess the credit risk of portfolios of consumer loans rather than a models of the credit risks of individual loans.

About the Author

Lyn Thomas is Professor of Management Science at the School of Management at the University of Southampton and has for the last twenty five years been active as a researcher and consultant in the consumer credit area. He has co-authored and edited books and written over forty papers on consumer credit. He was the founder of the Credit Research Centre at the University of Edinburgh and has been joint organiser of the ten international Credit Scoring conferences. He is one of the principal investigators running the Quantitative Financial Risk Management Centre, a Past President of the Operational research Society, a consultant for several international financial organisations, and advisor to UK government departments. Professor Thomas is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, and Operational Reseach Society.

Perfect Credit Scoring Book For Learning and Reference

This book is the kind of book you need when you start in a particular field of business or have been there for a while and need to remind yourself why certain things are done in a certain way. The author starts out with first principles and builds on the basics to cover every application and all the key alternative approaches. This book is not just "This is What We Do", it is also "And Here is Why and How". Everything is explained using examples and case studies.

There are a lot of mathematical symbols decorating many of the pages but none of it is particularly advanced and the non-mathematician can follow it easy enough if she starts at the beginning. If you get lost and forget what f(x) and p(g|x) are meant to be then just look at the example and it is all ridiculously easy to follow when the author puts it in plain English.

The author does a great job of marrying theorems to business sense, so whether you are a statistics god heading one way or a business guru heading the other there is something for you here. The references are also top notch, so if you want more depth on something then the author usually points you to the definitive source. If you are only going to buy one book on the subject then you can do a lot worse than this one.

It would have been helpful to survey the alternatives, and while I know that the (very nice) book by Raymond Anderson has a different style and is not a competitor, and the book by Naeem Siddiqi has uninspiring reviews, I cannot access the two books co-authored by Helen McNab. Steven Finlay's book looks solid, but largely "nested" by the combo of "Consumer credit models" and the 2002 book by Thomas, Edelman and Crook - which, I believe, jointly capture the domain knowledge available in book form.

The book's subtitle, "pricing, profit and portfolios", identifies its focus and its difference from, and complementarity to, the 2002 predecessor. Chapters 3-5 are new. Chapter 5 stands a little apart from the rest and discusses all matters Basel, so the book's core is Chapters 3 and 4. The 50-page-long Chapter 3 considers the one-period interest-rate-setting decision (focusing on take-up rate and adverse selection; there is some discussion of non-price incentives, but it is not worked out and quickly skips over conditional logit to talk about something LP). Chapter 4, with 70 pages, goes multi-period, bringing in Markov chains and survival analysis. (Curiously, pages 207-209 show an ostensibly dynamic model that actually has no state dynamics - shockingly, the decision rule turns out to be time-invariant. I group this slip-up with the many typos scattered across the book, and a tiny number of minor statistical misstatements).

The modeling on display may not always be immediately actionable, but it's always illuminating, and Lyn Thomas, in my opinion, is a really positive example of academic engagement with industry. His books, including this one, are the best thing on offer, and a must-see for practitioners in the area.

Jack Cristil (1925–2014) was a Southeastern Conference icon and the Voice of Bulldog athletics for more than five decades. In this biography, Cristil’s remarkable life and career is shared with all Bulldog fans. Authored by Mississippi journalist Sid Salter with a foreword by distinguished Mississippi State University alum John Grisham, the book originally sold over 10,000 copies and raised over $170,000 for the Jacob S. “Jack” Cristil Scholarship in Journalism at MSU.

With a fifty-eight-year association with MSU, Cristil was the second-longest tenured college radio play-by-play announcer in the nation at the time of his 2011 retirement. During his legendary career as the Voice of the Bulldogs, Cristil called 636 football games since 1953. That’s roughly 60 percent of all the football games played in school history. He was in his 54th season as the men’s basketball play-by-play voice, having described the action of almost 55 percent of all the men’s basketball games. In all, Cristil shared with Bulldog fans across the Magnolia State and around the world more than 1,500 collegiate contests. Central to Cristil’s inspiring story was his upbringing in Memphis as the son of first-generation Russian-Jewish immigrants. This paperback edition is updated with new material covering Cristil’s death and memorial service, with additional post-retirement and memorial photos.

Wrap in in Maroon and White

Great book that would be a great gift for those who love Mississippi State, stories about how things were in much simpler times, and/or those interested in how hard work and love of the craft can bring rewards measured in respect and love by one's audience rather than money.

RIP Jack, you are missed by many.
