My husband bought this book for his fellow workers!

I bought this book for my husband shortly after it first was printed because I thought it would enrich our marriage of a few years. I took a "sneak peek" at the book and read it all in one night! I learned so much about myself as a woman and had some real laughs about how we really do think! My husband read it and commented that three books changed his life: The Bible, "How to Win Friends and Influence People", and this one. He bought a few paperbacks and took them to his young married friends at work. I have given this as bridal shower gifts because its value is lasting. Now I am ordering another one to replace my long lost book I loaned out. It is easy to read a book that it so true but amusing also.

Several informative bits if you're willing to look for them

I found this book by chance and decided to read it and I don't regret that I did. This book touches on many causes of depression in women based on a survey Dr. Dobson conducted. I think he did manage to hit the mark but his survey was very leading. He ask women to rank ten items on how much each one bothered them. The list included issues such as self esteem, sexual problems, problem with in-laws, problems with children, time constraints and busyness, hormones, and others. I feel if his survey was a little more open ended he might have found different results, but the problems he choose to address are things all married couples face at one time or another and are worth looking at.

This book is primarily written about stay at home mothers more than women in general. It does promote that women should be at home with their children, especially while their young. Even, Dr. Dobson admits that this situation isn't always possible in our society. This book doesn't state that the only place for women is in the home, but it does encourage those that choose that position. It stresses the importance of full-time mothers and seeks to restore some of the respect that has been lost for them.

After reading this I did gain some insight on women's emotional need to "vent", as my wife puts it, and how that can sometimes be caused by hormones. I also gained new perspective on how a non-involved father's behavior is like forcing his wife to be a single parent. There were a few other things I gained from this book, but to gain them I had to sift through pages of useless information, including a whole chapter on the benefits of hormone replacement therapy.

While I originally started reading this to gain insight on my wife I felt like the book turned from that and seemed most times to be written to women. Like I said, I gained a little. The information in the book is insightful, but it isn't anything I would call profound. To any prospective readers out there I would suggest looking for something else. Its a good book, just not great.

Gold nuggets can be found within

Yes, this book was written in 1977 and it shows. However, there are a few golden nuggets scattered throughout the book. The main purpose of the book is to address the sources of depression in women, as identified through questionnaires filled out by over 5,000 women attendees at Family Life Seminars. According to the survey, the sources of depression in women are (in order of most troublesome to least troublesome): low self-esteem; fatigue and time pressure; loneliness, isolation, and boredom; absence of romantic love in marriage; financial difficulties; sexual problems in marriage; menstrual and physiological problems; problems with the children; aging; and in-law problems.

You can see that the sources of depression in women weren't radically different in 1977 as compared to today. So while the book has some dated attitudes and ideas, it is possible to derive insight from the reading. Each chapter contains anecdotes and Dobson's observations, and ends with a question and answer section.

One of the sections that I found interesting was Dobson's suggestions on how wives can "teach" their husbands about women's emotional needs. Instead of nagging, Dobson says to plan the timing, setting, and manner to focus on your needs and desires rather than his inadequacies and shortcomings. Dobson also has an extended section that examines popular ideas about the meaning of 'love', and another section where he gives tips on how husbands can enhance sensuality in situations where the wife's sex drive is inhibited for whatever reason (and Dobson discusses a short list of reasons). Finally, there is a fascinating section on the emotional and physical symptoms of estrogen deprivation (I would love for this section to be verified or updated by current medical knowledge).

valuable in school and later as a reference

Excellent reference even out of school. The sections are: "symptoms, signs and investigations," "disorders of anatomical regions," "infections," "diffuse and system disorders," and "psychological factors in neurology." The diagrams really helped me with learning function and dysfunction in several areas: cranial nerves, epilepsy, headaches, parkinsonism, MS, multiple other disorders. This book is well divided for easy reading into brief chapters with diagrams, photos of imaging studies and even photos of clinical signs and patient presentation where applicable.

Of Varro's more than seventy works involving hundreds of volumes we have only one on agriculture and country affairs (Rerum Rusticarum) and part of his work on the Latin language (De Lingua Latina; Loeb nos. 333, 334), though we know much about his Satires. Each of the three books on country affairs begins with an effective mise en scene and uses dialogue. The first book deals with agriculture and farm management, the second with sheep and oxen, the third with poultry and the keeping of other animals large and small, including bees and fishponds. There are lively interludes and a graphic background of political events.

Classical Farming

If you are interested in the history of agriculture this is a fine book. Varro and Cato are engaging and chatty writers. They also offer practical advice for farm management. It's easy to see why these books have survived for so long.

Excellent Resource For Learning About Agriculture.

If you are looking for a book on Agriculture, this is one that is a good resource for learning about agriculture. Cato and Varro both lived a life of simplicity and did follow the principle of "hard-work". They were both satisfied with their accomplishments and were teaching the basics of agriculture in their writings. In Cato's writing, he imparts medical and cooking advice, which the recipes he shares are his homemade remedies. In Varro's writing, he teaches farm managment and the care of livestock. In the writings of both authors, they both shed light on the ancient Roman religion, which is very important in understanding what life was like in ancient Rome. Overall, I like this book for historical purporses and I do like the fact that the book contains Latin and English.

timeless maxims

It's somewhat of a strange sensation to read this translated text, by two authors dead for over 2100 years. The narrative is presented in both Latin and English. With the book being open at some location, the left page is in Latin, the right in English.

The details of farming might still be familiar to present day farmers. Some are timeless maxims about animal husbandry. Like raising pigs or sheep. The cultivation of numerous crops is also described. Grapes. Apples. Etc. There is also careful attention to the need for manure, to keep the soil fertile. Crop rotation does not seem to be mentioned. It may have been unknown to the Romans.

Sir William Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England (1765-1769) stands as the first great effort to reduce the English common law to a unified and rational system. THE THIRD OF A FOUR-VOLUME "CLASSIC" SET OF THE LAW

Sir William Blackstone (1723-1780) was an English jurist, judge and Tory politician; these Commentaries were first published in four volumes (On on the Rights of Persons; On the Rights of Things; Of Private Wrongs; Of Public Wrongs) between 1765-1769, and were very influential on the development of the American legal system. Other volumes in this series are: Commentaries on the Laws of England: A Facsimile of the First Edition of 1765-1769, Vol. 1, Commentaries on the Laws of England Vol.2, and Commentaries on the Laws of England (Vol. 4).

He begins by saying, "Wrongs are divisible into two sorts of species: private wrongs, and public wrongs. The former are infringements or privation of the private or civil rights belonging to individuals considered as individuals... the latter are a breach and violation of public rights and duties, which affect the whole community... To investigate the first of these species of wrongs, with their legal remedies, will be our employment in the present book..." (Pg. 2)

He points out that the term "exchequer" (as in "court of the Exchequer") is so called "from the checqued cloth, resembling a chess-board, which covers the table there; and on which... the sums are marked and scored with counters." (Pg. 44)

He states that "With regard to the third absoute right of individuals, or that of private property, though the enjoyment of it, when acquired, is strictly a personal right; (but) it's nature and original, and the means of it's acquisition or loss, fell more directly under our second general division, of the rights of things..." (Pg. 138) He argues, "the law gives no private remedy for anything for a private wrong. Therefore no action lies for a public or common nuisance, but an indictment only: because the damage being common to all the king's subjects, no one can assign his particular proportion of it." (Pg. 219)

He suggests, "the trial by jury ever has been, and I trust ever will be, looked upon as the glory of the English law. And, if it has so great an advantage over others in regulating civil property, how much must that advantage be heightened, when it is applied to criminal cases!" (Pg. 379)

While this reprinted edition (e.g., using an "s" that looks to us like an "f") may be "off-putting" to some readers, I personally don't think it's a big deal; Blackstone's principles and reasoning are of such interest that they are certainly worth a bit of reading effort.

About the Author
Leon Chaitow ND DO is an internationally known and respected osteopathic and naturopathic practitioner and teacher of soft tissue manipulation methods of treatment. He is author of over 60 books, including a series on Advanced Soft Tissue Manipulation (Muscle Energy Techniques, Positional Release Techniques, Modern Neuromuscular Techniques) and also Palpation Skills; Cranial
Manipulation: Theory and Practice; Fibromyalgia Syndrome: A Practitioner’s Guide to Treatment, and many more. He is editor of the peer reviewed Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, that offers a multidisciplinary perspective on physical methods of patient care. Leon Chaitow was for many years senior lecturer on the Therapeutic Bodywork degree courses which he helped to design at the School of Integrated Health, University of Westminster, London, where is he now an Honorary Fellow. He continues to teach and practice part-time in London, when not in Corfu, Greece where he focuses on his writing.
